Would have thought that if it was a filter prob (partial blockage e.t.c) then the spluttering would have occurred in any gear, not just fourth? Especially if you've taken to near red line in every other gear with a wide open throttle getting it there, fuel pressure would have been constant...

The 7 litre capacity includes the torque converter (as far as I can remember from my VR auto) so when you drain the box you don't get the oil that's in the convertor hence the difference. I can't remember if there's a way of draining the convertor as well (I've gone back to a manual with my VY...

You can get those little round magnets on a telescoping rod thingies. Go fishing,if the bulbs got any metal at all the magnet should pull it right back out the hole it fell in. Just for future reference.
