I don't remember there being a shim when I took off the original starter... but then it could have been stuck to it and I didn't notice. and unless it was somehow stuck to the block, there definately isn't a shim there now. any idea how thick they are?

its a v6. i'll have to pull off the flexplate cover and stick my head under there while someone starts the car so i can have a good look at what is going on. fun times.

Just put on a CPC cap, and after a short hard drive no leaks around the cap. We'll see how it goes over the next few days.

Yeah the new cap is a Tridon brand. The old cap was a Tridon too, the funny thing is the old cap worked fine on the old radiator, old cap on new radiator = leaks... new cap on new radiator = leaks... I'll look into getting a CPC one then.

Yup, its the only thing keeping the shaft in. But it is a pain to get off, if you had the right tool it would be easy. I ended up using a drafting compass to open the ring and pry it out with a screwdriver. I would be very interested to know the proper way to remove it.
