Just had the ute in for its 1500km checkup, I asked the guys at the dealers if they could do the guidlines update for me. As usual they were more than happy to help out, however for some reason they were unable to download it? The checkup took maybe an hour then they spent the rest of the day...

Another update, the new steering column has been fitted up and once again I have perfect steering. No rattles. Took the dealer just over three hours to replace it if that helps anyone. Cheers OD

A bit of an update guys. I fitted the rack ends which was a surprisingly easy job to do. Then took it for a drive and the clunk, while reduced, was still there :( Put it up on the hoist at the local Holden dealer and had a look and eventually isolated the problem to the upper steering column...

...we have a winner! The knocking is coming from inside those rack boots, more so on the left hand one but feels like both are doing it. I can see how they are replaced so will get a pair and replace them asap. Thanks for your help VC, much appreciated!:spot on:

Gothic...30mm are you sure? That seems like a lot to me, especially from a car that steered so directly from new. Nitro I checked the strut tops last night and they seem to be fine eg no moving around when I move the steering and they seem solid in their mounts, VC...you may be onto something...
