Really, so everyone has to buy new cars from now on do they? I'm an apprentice mechanic aswell.. Our used cars we work on get quoted up with any work needed, if it is over a certain amount it is sent off to a wholesaler, otherwise we fix it. If it isn't fixed, we won't sell it, simple.

Yeah rear main seal would be the problem for the leak underneath. Very common problem with Commodores. Far as I know, trans has to be removed and it is just a smallish o-ring seal in there that leaks.

You would really need to take into consideration the way the cars are driven and the condition of the parts already. Nothing is really 'designed' to break at a certain time/distance travelled, but obviously things will wear out over time (common parts being water pump, key remotes etc).

Hmm, I'll see where I'm at in a years time when I'm off my greens :)
