    Roof lining repair

I repaired the headlining on two VRs 4 or 5 years ago. I bought a can of contact adhesive and realising that it would be difficult to re-align the existing fabric over the cardboard, I only peeled it back half way. I then cleaned off the foam from that half of the exposed cardboard and fabric...

    Is door trim removal required?

I took the panels off for this exercise on my car. I think you would struggle to get the adhesive/sealant in there without making a mess if you left the panel on the door. The adhesive I used was a polyurethane sealant/adhesive and was done about 6 or 7 years ago. There are heaps of brands...

A/C blow ambient air VR V6

Before getting a re-gas, do a careful inspection of the condensor and A/C pipework connections. Look for dirty/oily areas where you may have a leak. Remove windscreen wiper arms and the black plastic plenum cover beneath them and check the A/C pipe connections you will see there. Some of...

Need help ASAP about power steering pump

Make sure that the two pins that pass through the 'bits and pieces' inside the pump are engaged properly in the two holes at the front end of the power steering housing. If not, you wont have power assistance.

steering wheel cant move after replace the steering pump

You need to bleed the system. From Gregory's: Raise the front of the vehicle so that wheels are clear of the floor. With engine stopped, turn the steering wheel from lock to lock several times. Top up the fluid as necessary. Repeat until the fluid level remains constant. Start the engine...

Any installed power steering pump seal kit? No power steer issue.

I had this problem of no power after fitting new seals. I found that the two pins that pass through the pressure plate need to finish flush with the pressure plate and engage in holes in the pump body. I think I rebuilt the pump by starting with the pins inserted first and threading the other...

power locks not locking and causing the central locking to lock then instantly unlock

I posted the following HOW TO on 24/5/2011 How to: Replace faulty door actuator with non-genuine (Dynamco) unit For years I put up with the problem of the doors locking/unlocking when the remote button was pressed but fixed it recently by replacing the driver's door lock actuator. This was a...

    Questions about 1997 Lexcen CSi

Front guards are same as Statesman (larger cutaway for parking lights). Front bumper is unique to Lexcen, with indicators in the bar. Side protection mouldings, tail lights and boot garnish are unique to Lexcen. Seat trim is different to Commodore.

VR V6 steering problem - power loss during tight turns at low speed

Is there a chance that the replacement pump has been dismantled and re-assembled with new seals by a non-mechanic? I put a new seal kit in mine and bled the system a couple of times without achieving any power assistance. The two pins that pass through the 'bits and pieces' inside the pump...

    vs coolant

I'd stay away from the Tectaloy. The mechanic I use advised me he's had a few vehicles where severe corrosion has occurred where this product has been used in cars he's dealt with. This sort of information is not necessarily reliable though as I can't say that the cars it was used in hadn't...

Thanks mate, but I might just get to it with the side cutters. I was hoping to re-use it.

fuel tank return hose 'quick connector' removal

I need to replace the VR's fuel pump and I'm struggling with the 'quick connector' clip holding the fuel tank return rubber hose from the assembly. Gregory's shows a special tool being 2 mm diameter bent to a 'U' shape, 100 mm long with 2 upturned 10 mm legs but I can't figure what to do with...

    Coolant hose top fuel rail

Brass may not be too good if you have an aluminium radiator. Aluminium is near the anodic (active end) of the galvanic table. Brass is up towards the cathodic (noble) end. Metals at opposite ends of the table cause corrosion at the active end.

AIRCON leak - not cold, what could it be? More info

I've had 2 VRs with leaking ACs and have wasted a few re-gas services that only lasted up to 9 months before the system needed re-gassing again. In one car (a Lexcen) the leak was from the nipple that is bolted onto the top of the compressor - I had the service people remove the nipple and fit...

VR ABS rear brakes spin with brakes oushed on

I would suggest that the brakes have not been bled properly. Take it to a mechanic - it's not worth compromising on safety.

    Wont run on gas

Thanks for your reply. That numbering system is quite different to the VR and it was not what I expected so I gave up. Can you tell me if each code repeats 3 times?

    Wont run on gas

After showing my brother how to bring up any codes on the dash of his VX Berlina Ser2 (by looping a wire between the 5 and 6 pins in the top line of the socket under the steering column) which put up a quickly flashing engine light that I couldn't understand, he discovers that the car will no...

    any advice?

I had a leaking fuel hose last year - fuel over the intake manifold but could not detect where it was leaking from. It was a cold day and I had only driven about 2 km. There was a strong fuel smell, so I popped the bonnet, soaked up the fuel and restarted the engine, but couldn't see any sign...

    Power steering pump problem

It's all sorted now thanks Brett. The pins need to finish flush with the pressure plate. Once I'd dismantled the whole thing by tapping on the pulley end I could see where the pins had to engage in the pump body. It was a case of rebuilding the unit starting with the pins inserted first and...

    Power steering pump problem

I've got a Gregorys and I bought the parts from ebay for $10 + $4 postage. Thanks for the offer. I'm about to go out and attempt a full strip down of the pump. I think the pressure plate is stuck on through air pressure as it's so oily. Do you know if the pins should fit flush with the...

    Power steering pump problem

Thanks Brett. I've just come inside after finishing a partial strip down and re-installation of the pump, bleeding etc (for the 3rd time) and it's still not working. I only removed the pins and rotated the the pressure plate rotating it until the pins sunk down to about 2 mm above the face of...

    Power steering pump problem

I replaced a rear 'O' ring seal and reservoir seal on the power steering pump. The intention was to go through the whole unit and replace all the seals. After removing the back cover, all I could manage to get out were two pins - the remaining parts would not come out and I didn't want to...

    Inner window rubber/felt strips

I agree with Linzi, and have re-fixed these strips on 2 VRs we have in the family over 5 or 6 years ago and they are still OK. Sikaflex covers a range of products and I know I used a polyurethane adhesive/sealant from another manufacturer. Here is one from Sika which should do the trick but...

    Wipers

I use demineralised water in the washer bottle. As with Dakster I use the Rain-X on a clean windscreen (cleaned with Meguiars spray) and the wipers slide easily over the windscreen. I've found the demineralised water avoids the build-up of salts on the spray outlets.

Can someone help me out I.D this part and how to take it off?

It is a Connector, Water By-pass. Costs $9.80 ea + GST. The 'O' ring that goes with it costs $6.80 + GST. I purchased a couple in October 2011. To get it out I think I jammed a flat screwdriver into it and carefully worked it around to ease it out. Be careful to not damage the metal surround.

VS maintenence/servicing; what else should I do?

I use an engine flush before an oil change - $8 and have done so for the last 100,000 km (now on 220,000 km). When I took the manifold off to change the gaskets 6 months ago I couldn't believe how clean the underside of the manifold was. I've seen a manifold covered in burnt oil on another VR...

    fuel issues

Old fuel hoses can leak when engine is cold, spurting fuel over the engine on start-up, only to stop leaking as the engine warms up. Fuel can leak over the top of the fuel tank when full if any of the hoses on the top of the tank have perished. Both of these problems occurred on my VR V6 last...

    Fuel leaking

Are you sure it's not leaking between the fuel hose and the nipple. I had this happen on the VR when the engine was cold. As soon as it warmed up the problem went away. New fuel hoses sorted the problem. The old hoses were very hard and could not be effectively sealed by tightening the clamps.

    VS Sedan Towing Across Nullabor

You mention the loss of coolant. If there are no external signs of leakage you may have leaking inlet manifold gaskets. Also, I've been thinking of doing a similar trip (without trailer) and with 191,000 km on the odometer I will be looking at taking a spare fuel pump as advice from this forum...

think i should buy it ?

The rough idle could be caused by a dirty throttle body and IAC (Idle Air Control) valve. Cleaning them is a fairly simple exercise. With a 16 yo car that's done 240,000 km, be prepared to spend a couple of thousand on parts over the next year or two for items such as radiator and hoses, CAS...

    cooling issue

If the snapped 'bolt' on the water pump is on the left (looking from the front) and is directly above another bolt, it is not actually a bolt but a locating pin. ignition problems and sometimes cuts out while driving

I suggest the stalling engine is due to a faulty Crank Angle Sensor. With the engine not turning over, try pressing the button on the key before turning the key to start. A faulty inhibitor switch may also be the problem if it is an automatic. Move the gear stick from Park to Neutral and try...

    Vs misfire on angle

Have you checked that the plug leads are fully pressed onto the spark plugs? Also, it is possible to damage the leads if they are not carefully pulled off the spark plugs. You could check the continuity of the leads with an ohm meter. Gregory's states the following limits for high tension...
