VS Commodores have a habit of getting an air lock in the heater system, not allowing the coolant to circulate to the unit, try emptying the system then refilling it slowly while the motor is running and is warm/hot with the heater turned on. Good luck!

I had the same symptoms from my vs. Turned out that the thermostat was not opening properly and overheating the motor. I replaced the thermostat and have had no problems since. (just a thought)

Vs stops when hot? I have a '96 VS that did the same thing, have sat on the side of the road many times wondering why. Then I removed the thermostat from the engine, it has not stopped since. Good luck.
