How to tell if a LSD is working

Have found a complete rear axle assembly at a wrecker in Sydney to suit a tonner (live axle), but the donor tonner is a V6 auto. Wrecker says they are the same as the V8 manual, but ...wreckers..mmmmmmmm Can anyone confirm if the diff is the same?

How to tell if a LSD is working

My sons' VY one tonner is supposed to have a LSD in it from the factory, but the previous owner put a lower ratio diff centre in it. I suspect that either the new diff is not a LSD, or it is stuffed. We had one back wheel jacked up today to change a tyre, and noticed that the wheel was free to...

New VY series2 radiator how much??

I replaced the radiator in my son's VY one tonner 5.7 Got one from natrad, they offered a choice of a cheapy or the Calsonic (which is what Holden use) Went with the genuine Calsonic, was around $350 from memery. They just are not worth repairing mate, you can dismantle them, but eventually...

    Textralia clutches

Have not had one mate, but made enquiries about it. Spoke to them on phone (Adelaide I think?) quite helpfull. They gave me contact details for local agent, who gave me a price. Can't remember if Kit comes with new slave cyl. (most aftermarket kits do) but does come with flywheel.

    clutch plate help

When i was shopping around for a new clutch for my VN 5L I was told not to go with the HD because the firewall is weak where the outer cable ends, and the extra force exerted by the HD clutch on the cable can cause damage there.

VT vacuum supply to heater tap

Heater tap works fine, there is no vacuum getting to it when control turned to cold. Looks like a visit inside the dash again....

VT vacuum supply to heater tap

Wife's Vt V6 had a problem last year when heater tap would not turn off, due to no vacuum at the diaphragm. Against my better judgment I pulled the dash apart and couldn't find anything wrong. Followed all the hoses, the controls were all working perfectly, operating the little plunger bizzo...

    VT 5L engine cover

Sounds like Torx screws, you can buy a cheap set of wrenches for them, similar to Allen key wrenches. My VN 5l had normal Allen headed screws.

Vibration when torque converter locks up

Used to have a VN v6, similar thing to Rob drag racer, but it was the HT leads breaking down. Once it dropped into 4th, under a slight load it felt like the rear axle was going to fall out. Very alarming!! Manually lock it back into 3rd and it was fine.

need advice on this situation please

I think I read in the manual that you can't grind the crank in the ecotec, they are a throw away. Another thought, water in the sump (could easily have got in when maniflod removed) can do a lot of damage very quickly, as it sits in the bottom of the sump where the oil pick up is. My guess is...

    VT Temperature Spiking

My wife's' VT V6 was doing exactly the same thing occasionally, and only started doing it after I replaced the water pump and radiator. They can be a bitch to bleed properly, and I suspect ours had a small pocket of air somewhere. No water at the thermostat and it will not open. I just kept...

    gear box issues?

Cat converter blocked? My car had one of the cats blocked, was fine until they warmed up, probably 5 or 10 minutes, then guts of cat expands and engine wouldn't rev over 3K.

Sounds like a pretty short list of faults to me, I wish my son would get rid of his, I'm sick of rooting around with it.

    Flinders Street Protests

Thump in drivetrain at low speed

If it's a heavy dull thud could be broken engine mount. Mine was doing it from time to time. Confirmed it by blipping throttle at walking pace, really makes it thump.

    5ltr dizzy - quick question

the head of the bolt is 9/16", and a short flat dwarf ring spanner is handy. Don't forget you have to bridge 2 wires at the diagnostic connector near the ECU. Hope you have small hands and thin arms. :whistling

    not a happy chap

There is some truth in that old wives tale. I was watching a doco on Fox, they said it has only recently been discovered that they are venemous. There are 2 small poison glands at the back of the jaw. The buggers bite hard too. My 2 Jack russells are always trying to kill them in my yard. If I...

    Rare/Weird holdens

I don't know, it's got an HSV number on it somewhere apparently. Still just another VN shopping trolley to me. My old VN Berlina wagon with 5L and T5 was much more fun.

heads up to the ute owners out there..

Spot on James, in my case had to leave the standard wheels and tyres on the tonner. The VY one tonner is actually rated to carry more than a ton. Just wasn't worth the hassle. Even the standard tyres rated for it are bloody expensive. You also have to consider not only what is legal, but what...

    Rare/Weird holdens

A mate of mine has a HSV Vn Berlina wagon....with a V6 engine lol it's genuine. Also on the panel van thing, there is a talc mine up in the north of south oz where I used to get sent to service their earthmoving machinery. They had a pristine HR 3 door ambulance there which only had about 5,000...

5ltr cuts out going round corner

I once had an old Valiant that used to do exactly the same thing. The guts of the coil was loose, and the windings inside would contact the coil body every time I went around a right hand corner. It was a bugger to diagnose, and only fixed it by chance when I accidentally dented the coil and...

    VT Alternator issues

Check the condition of the terminal on the end of thick wire, where it attaches to the back of alternator. They were not soldered to the wire, only crimped. The connection gets crappy, creates a resistance and will get very hot. The alternator is trying to pump out max amps, but it can't get...

FADS - what is the latest?

They're multiplying like rabbits....pimped up Jap vans and tray tops, with air bag suspensions dragging their arses all over the place. I just don't get it, cause I'm sure they all still have the same 17 hamster power engines they were born with. Definitely a fad.

Which brand fuel do you use?

The Ethanol in fuel is a huge issue at the moment for boat owners. The problem is that ethanol absorbs moisture from the atmosphere. Boats being what they are, sit idle in driveways for months, all the time the fuel is soaking up moisture via the tank breather. The moisture then causes big...

Slave cylinder leaking, what else $$$$?

Thanks guys. cpbait the slave cylinder is not servicable apparrantly, and the thrust bearing/slave cyl. is all one unit. Anyone know if there is a spigot bearing or is it a bush in end of crank?

Slave cylinder leaking, what else $$$$?

The one tonner (5.7L) slave cyl. is leaking, while the box is out what else should I look at? Car has 170,000 kms, but my son only owned it for last 20,000. Have been told these clutches are usually only good for 100,000, so it's either been done before or it's on it's last legs. Have looked...

    Mafless Tune Surprised and Disappointed!

I was told by a local dyno shop (he has been doing MAFless tunes for years) that removing the MAF sensor is a waste of time unless the engine has had internal mods e.g. big cam etc. With just the usual air intake and exhaust mods, and a tune he can get just as much power without removing the MAF...

    instrument cluster

Thanks caaf, I'm kind of over it and probably won't chase it up any further. Getting sick of the "yeah drop it off at 7.30 and maybe we'll get to it today" run around. I should have mentioned it's a one tonner. Every time i try to order parts there is always some confusion as to what part is...

    fuel problem
