    Auto Trans Service

After a lot of searching and not finding any fittings that came even close to the right size I decided to drop down the lower pipe going to the radiator into a drain pan. A deep socket was zip tied to the line to help weigh it down. If I was to do it again I'd slip a bit of clear PVC hose over...

    Vz Alloytec Powertrain Light

You can buy code scanners for ~$100 that connect to a laptop/PC. Would be cheaper than doing a 500km round trip or randomly replacing parts, assuming you get post out where you live? And yup you can reset the codes by disconnecting the battery lead.

I think single din looks better so I went with that but it's very much a personal taste kind of thing.

    Auto Trans Service

Thanks for the replies everyone. I'm a bit unsure on what fitting is needed to rig up a drain hose. I found 1/2" UNC threaded fittings, is this the right thread? I checked out the current fluid level today and found it was way overfilled. I drained out 1.3L via the dipstick but it's still...

    Auto Trans Service

I'm planning to service my auto trans next week with a complete flush of oil and filter change. The DIY way I've seen done on other cars is to remove the trans oil hose leading to the radiator and run it into a drain pan. The engine is run for 10 seconds at a time to drain a fraction of the oil...

    Removing engine cover Alloytec190

One of the clips on mine is broken so there must be at least one mechanic out there who can't pull them off without breaking them!

    0-100kmh Times

I finally got around to going down the 1/4 tonight, only took me 2 months to get around to it haha. The best time I ran was only 16.37 at 85.71 mph but every other run was more like 16.6-16.7. So something must be up here, there's no way it should be this slow right?. Traction wasn't an issue...

    ticking noise

Often cars that are driven gently have this issue, do you ever give it a bit of stick? A few runs up to redline every now and then helps clear things out. Also, oil additives are best avoided at all costs.

    mist from air con vent

Seconding atmospheric moisture condensing due to the temperature drop. I had it happen once, scared the crap out of me, thought there was a fire for a second.

"... there's a school of mechanical thought which says I shouldn't be getting into a complex assembly I don't know anything about. I should have training or leave the job to a specialist. That's a self-serving school of mechanical eliteness I'd like to see wiped out." - Robert Prirsig

Need opinions within the week please

Another vote for the front. I reckon the back ones might look a lil better on a darker car but they don't seem right with white.

Just out of interest, how much did the fuel pump cost? They seem to be a pretty common problem.

    Running in oil/First oil change?

The finish left after cylinder honing on new engines is much better than it used to be so there is much less reliance on the rings grinding down the cylinder liners during break in. Now the debris generated during break in is only a fraction of what it used to be which is why you don't need the...

    Noisy Lifters?? LS1

It's an old trick many mechanics use to clear out engines that don't get much of a work out through their lives. Besides if your gonna own a V8 you might as well have some fun with it from time to time right :P

    Noisy Lifters?? LS1

On a certain other manufacturers line up of cars that are notorious for ticking lifters the only solution was to pull them out and clean out all the accumulated crap in them. Can't be too different on a Holden? Also don't underestimate how much a good flogging can help, these engines weren't...

    cylinder problem

To be fair, that's far from the only solution. Any mechanic worth talking to can pull the codes for you, or for $100 odd you can buy a scanner and check them yourself. That's what I did :D

    The Panel or Pod Test!!

It's hard to judge the performance of an airbox, intake pipe or air filter just by looking at it. Really the only way to find if there are any significant restrictions in the intake system, and if so where they are, is to test the pressure drop in various parts of the system with a manometer or...

How do i know if my coils are stuffed

I think you'd get a error code for a misfire if that was your problem. Have you been in any other VZs? Alloytec engines don't like to idle smoothly at all, they shake the whole car.

What weight oil for 160k VZ

I've got Nulon 10w30 in an alloytec with 195k km and the oil pressure is still spot on. About 80psi on a cold start, 40psi under moderate load and 50-60psi under higher load.

Just a general fuel consumption question

It's fairly straight forward to figure out just how much fuel constantly running headlights uses, I'm a little curious myself as my car is an ex fleet vehicle which has the lights wired to be constantly on. So how much fuel does it take to run 100W of lights? Alternators are fairly...

new spark plugs for vz commodore

Mitsubishi was the first in modern times to use direct injection, starting in 1996 and with over 1 million examples sold. In the following years it's been used by just about every major car manufacturer. Holden being 10+ years behind in technology and design is not exactly out of the ordinary...

new spark plugs for vz commodore

I would definitely look at the battery first, then possibly the starter motor. When you say it doesn't kick over do you mean it doesn't turn over at all? Or it keeps turning over but doesn't fire? NGK platinum plugs are $70 from Supercheap, I would only buy parts from Holden as a last resort...

Why is my alarm going off when I lock my car?

I think I remember reading in the manual that the 4 quick beeps indicates a fault detected. Could be a door or boot/bonnet slightly open like satos mentioned or an electric fault.

VCM Suite - to buy or not to buy - that is the question

I'm planning to buy the VCM pro sometime next week while the dollars high. I'll let you know my experiences after I've had a play with it. I think the major selling point is the compatiabilty between such a huge range of models as I'm planning to upgrade to a V8 sometime although the whole...

    VE SV6 .vs. VZ SV6??

To be fair the $50 billion covers virtually all forms of transport, new trains and rails, new ferries, new buses etc etc. It doesn't seem like an unreasonable figure given how ####ed Sydneys transport system is at the moment. To spend $50 billion just on cycle paths they'd have to be gold plated.

    flourescent lights?

As far as I know the only fluoro lights for cars are the ones that run along the side skirts of the car and shine onto the ground and some mini ones for interior lighting. Both of these have mostly been replaced by LEDs as they're much more durable and have a much longer life. I think the first...

    flourescent lights?

The 5th state of matter is called 'Bose-Einstein condensate' and occurs only at ultra low temperatues only slightly above 0K. Wikipedia does a much better job of explaining then I ever could Bose-Einstein condensate. It's really a bit vauge as to how many states of matter there are, it all...

    flourescent lights?

HID's and fluorescent lights work on different principles. HID lights have an arc of plasma which is the fourth state of matter (the others being the more commonly known solid, liquid and gas, there's also a fifth but that's not important.) In a plasma the outermost electrons of an atom are...

I'm not too worried about getting problems sorted in this thread, am really after 0-100 or 1/4 mile times for alloytec engines for a bit of comparison. Having said that I'll keep posting up findings as I go along as it could be of interest to someone? I have a code scanner/data logger being...

I'm really sorry to interject here, and I'm not in anyway having a go at you, I just want to help the community learn. 0-100kmh Times

There is a local drag strip that I plan on going to in the next few weeks to get some proper times, although it might be a bit embarassing being the slowest car at the track haha, I'd guess around 16s? I expect it should launch a lot better on a properly prepped track. I am just timing with a...
