Shift kit or just a boost valve? I had the same thing done (by Sureshift) about two and a half years ago and immediately felt the difference. From my understanding it not only helps the shifts but also helps with the longevity of the trans as well

Be wary, to change the sump gasket your looking at an engine out job so well over a grand. It's likely to be the sump gasket, the rear main is further back and oil won't collect in the sump guard

For 3100 it sounds like he is charging you for a full auto trans rebuild, and it sounds on the high side. An auto rebuild shouldnt cost any more than 2-2500. If you can, take it to an auto specialist and get a second opinion. I'm speculating but It may have been negligence on the mechanics part...
