Thanks for all of the replies. I contacted H & R and they got back to me pretty quickly. They are meant to look like that. I'm struggling to get my head around how a spring works when half of it is fully compressed. I guess I'll just have to see how it goes.

Thanks Shane. I'll give it another drive or two. If that's the case though, does it mean that only the un-binded parts of the spring do any work? Or does the binded section unbind when the suspension drops, like when you go over a bump? I'm just interested in the mechanics of it all.
