I've always liked Clarion as a brand, for some reason, probably goes back to the fact that the first really good system I heard was mostly Clarion. Head units are very good and they're amps aren't bad for the money.

I know some of the Alpines have changeable colours. My 9831 does, not sure about which of the current models do. The main buttons have 512 colours, and the rest of the backlights can be green or orange. Not completely sure, but I seem to remember some Blaupunkt HUs having an orange backlight.

Maybe you're getting stronger. Have you been eating more? It's a really interesting question, can't say I know the answer though.

Have you tried sealing and sound deadening your doors? Made a pretty big improvement in my VR, and costs less than a speaker upgrade. Bout $120 total.

Your amp should have a filter on it, called a low pass filter. Set it to ~80Hz.

Oh yeah just to add, if you get the 9965 you're gonna have to get an amp because it doesn't have an internal one.

From that list the 9857 probably isn't your best bet if you didn't like the 9831. It's actually got less sound adjustment features, i.e. no HPF/LPF, no parametric EQ, no time alignment. But it does have a nicer screen and better ipod connectivity. Still, it's more of a step sideways than a step...

MXpander is pretty useless, agreed. It's pretty much a glorified "loud" button. Do you know how to use EQ properly? I still think you should be able to get some decent sound out of the 9831 if you spend a bit of time with it. $200 is insanely cheap for that unit, I think they retailed for $799...

Is there a button above the dial that says "title"? If there is, pressing it changes what's being displayed. One of the options is the clock. I'm not 100% certain, but that's how it is on my 9831, which is pretty similar.

If the Jaycar splits are as good as everyone says, may as well put them in the back as well as they're not really that much more expensive than coax's. I've only heard the speakers in the shop, but they did sound pretty good.

Hmm... I took my VR key apart for fun when I got the car, took the batteries out and had a general look around. It works fine I didn't even think anything of it. It's a series I though, maybe that's got something to do with it?
