I unfortunately don't have any ramps, etc to be able to get the car up high enough to even drop the transmission pan out nor the tools :( I've spoken with the mechanic and come to an arrangement, he's going to give me a call back. This whole thing feels like a massive gamble though.

This is the 5-Speed auto, there is no trans dipstick, its all sealed unit.

Have you checked the coolant reservoir? Any discharge/gunk on the coolant reservoir dipstick? Could try placing cardboard under the car to see if any leaks show up by leaking onto the cardboard.

I left my lights on for 1 hour last night (including interior) and didn't realise. The battery was only just under what was required as no lights were dimmed, windows, etc all worked perfect but would click upon trying to start.. thank god we had friends over and jumper leads in my boot.

I had these messages show up when my ECU was dead. An easy way to tell, if you have access to an OBD reader, it will constantly give an error saying it cannot connect, then will, then will fail again over and over.

Must be a second hand unit, the ECU itself was $1100 and then $250-$300 for the reprogramming.

I ended up catching a bus to/from work for 3 weeks while i scraped the cash together to get it replaced.

Yep, i was getting the same symptoms and same messages, new ECU.. it cost me just over $1300 ($1385 or so iirc)

Glad to see it was stuff that was just overlooked rather than costly $$$ to repair.

Surging itself, appears to have been related to 1 spark plug cracked and coil packs needing replacing. I'm still experiencing some performance issues..... still investigating those.

I had this same thing occur a year or 2 back when my ECU shat itself, along with the SVS and Power Train error messages. When this was occurring, hooking up a scan tool showed lost communication to the ECU, it might work for a bit, then does it again.

Any chance of taking a pic so we can see exactly what you mean? The only thing i could think of, without seeing any images, check your throttle body and see if its got any oil in it, and then check the upper intake gasket. Big assumption, but maybe the blow-by oil is leaking out of the upper...

Considering the mechanic was the one who fixed it and assured you its fine, i would take it back to them instantly and raise the concern. He may know what it is and be able to correct it easily, before anything bad potentially occurs. (its hard to understand the type of noise it is)
