You don't have to take the shell apart. The eBay ones just push in and stay there. They have a lip on them that holds them in. It really is very simple to replace the buttons.

Well it seems like some part of the clutch tried to escape. The bell housing is cracked about half way around the circumference and the are a couple of nice little holes around the top half. Not ideal.
