A piece of black insulation tape over the light always works for me. :hit:

    VN front of engine noise?

I'd take the belt off and rotate the tensioner wheel by hand and see if its bearing feels or sounds a bit rough.

    Vn 304 5 speed wagon ..

Have you tried the idle setting on the throttle body, the one that holds the throttle open just a whisker? It's not an idle speed setting of course because if you adjust it the IAC will move a few ticks further open or closed to compensate. But it might be too far one way or the other and the...

VP V8 code 44 and popping. And wouldn't start

Common thing on all EFI cars. Does a modern car really use no fuel when off gas? - Page 1 - General Gassing - PistonHeads

VP V8 code 44 and popping. And wouldn't start

Don't forget when you lift your foot, above a certain rpm the injection shuts off completely so there is only plain old air (21% oxygen) going straight past the sensor. ECU shold ignore that though. Maybe the O2 sensor has gotten a bit sluggish and slow to respond? Here is a good place to ask ->...

    New 5 litre p/s pump

Gotta get a new pump for the old bus. The fluid reservoir is leaking underneath at the seam near the front. A reco pump costs about $98. Anyway, would a reco pump come with the pulley and reservoir attached or are they considered separate parts?

VN V8 trouble shooting - missing , runs rough

Could be the coil breaking down internally. When you put a bit of load on the motor the plugs need a lot more voltage to fire, and if the coil is a bit sad it will spark over inside instead sending it onward to the distributor. Another possibility is the rotor button, for basically the same...

    vp wont start after backfire

Even more common on engines with waste spark ignition (double ended coils). If a cylinder misfires on the compression stroke then one full turn later it has a live load of gas + air pumping out the exhaust valve right when the next (waste) spark occurs. Cylinder lights up and then the inlet...

Vn v8 running poor and drinking gas

If it is idling fast and the electric radiator fan is always on then the computer might be running in limp home mode, so no spark advance, no power, no economy. When you say gas you mean LPG not gasoline? Dunno what NZ calls LPG.

That saves me a lot of trouble. Thanks.

6 cyl and V8 tailshafts the same?

Uni joints and maybe the CV joint are getting a bit so so. Would rather go to the wreckers and get a complete tailshaft and change the bits first, then stick it on. Will a 6 cyl tailshaft be okay for V8 or are the uni joints etc bigger?

    Dyno Time - 304

Third being 1:1 ratio where the planetary gears are locked together and rotate as a single lump might have less friction losses than first or second gear where the planetary bits roll around each other.

    Dyno Time - 304

Why do they bother giving you a torque reading with a chassis dyno??? All they can actually measure is speed and tractive effort, and from those calculate kW. Things like diff ratio, tyre diameter, what gear it's in, torque converter characteristics etc etc all would change the calculated torque...

    Burning oil 5.0L

You didn't install a pair of fancy aftermarket rocker covers did you? Guys on the Holden 6 forums have been caught like that because many aftermarket ones don't have a proper baffle under the PCV valve causing it to suck out lots of oil droplet.

VL 308 V8 into VN SS - will it bolt straight in?

So does a carby VL 304 have 308 carby or 304 EFI valve layout? If the latter, are the heads unique to the VL engine?

When I pull the bonnet release handle, sometimes it doesn't pull the cable far enough to release the catch. How do you adjust it so it pulls further?

    VP Air Conditioning system

The skinny pipe is hot so leave that alone. The fat pipe is cold and so any heat it picks up from the engine compartment might reduce the remaining cooling capacity. On mine I wrapped the cold pipe with exhaust bandage. Also the drier-receiver can thing next to the firewall that also gets cold I...

Capacitor on Air con aux fan VP V8

My car has a capacitor there too. I think it is just for radio static suppression. When the fan is running the brushes in the motor would be sparking a little bit as they normally do, and this would make an AM radio cackle.

    Strange issue bouncing tacho

Changing the Hall effect is a hassle. Maybe get another tacho first and connect it up and see if that bounces. If not, that would rule out the Hall effect.

    Sump guard and engine temperature

My car is always inclined to get a bit hot in summer, particularly in traffic. Seeing it is a BT1 it has a sump guard, and this would stop some air passing around the hot sump. Has anyone ever done an A/B temperature test with and without the sump guard?

    muffler

There is a setting the computer that shuts of the fuel when you lift your foot IF it is above a certain rpm. That will also stop it crackling and popping like a carby engine does. Somebody suitably skilled in the art should be able to change that for you without too much trouble.

Raspy noise from V6 when cold

Maybe not the LPG mixer so much as the IAC air path. Starting at the 38 sec point in the vid https://youtu.be/JNQBHEARW6s?t=38s as the idle speed bottoms out you can hear the IAC start to flow more to pull the revs up. It would be open wider when the engine is cold so that would make it noisier...

    VP V8 Auto shifting

Manually upshifting simply allows the tranny to move to the next higher gear if it is ready to. It doesn't force it to shift if it doesn't want to. Downshifting is quite another matter... :hit: On non-computer controlled trannies like in VN-VP pulling it down a cog or three can make things rev...

    VP Ex Victorian Chaser

I have asked far and wide about this. The info I have is the only ones with any changes were VT 5.0, the idle in P/N was increased to help keep charge in the battery when idling for long periods with the roof lights and high beams going.

Can Anyone Post Pictures From Gregory's Manual For Vp Speed Sensor Section

That black plastic thing poking out the passenger side of the tranny. Pretty much directly below the gear lever. That's a V8 one but I expect a 6 cyl one is the same.

Remove V8 sump while still in car?

Short story is the big ends rattle a bit before oil pressure comes up, and I want to make the car last another year or two without spending real money on it. After that will give it to a mate to fit the running gear to his LC. Has done 500,000+ km without being opened up. Anyway, can the sump be...

Handbrake bangs and clunks while driving.

Check and see whether the edge of the handbrake shoe is all beat up. Just having the handbrake on will never do that. If the shoes are unrestrained and flopping around they will likely get minced up.

    Sluggish VP V8

I also have a random hose with no vacuum at the back of the block, on the driver's side. I think it is a vent for the auto tranny.

    304 Ignition, ICE or MSD

Maybe a VT 304 distributor might do the trick. They have two sensors - one 8-pulse for ignition trigger and one single-pulse for sequential injection sync but you could also use that for coil sync, especially if you had an 8-channel coil driver.

    vp commodore a/c orifice tubes

Mine makes the same noise too. Sort of like a hight pitched whistle. Starts every time the compressor comes on and the gas pressure builds up. Mine is not related to the fan.

    304 Ignition, ICE or MSD

Sounds like a nice setup you have, but the first thing I'd do is find someone that knows what's what and get a decent tune. You may well find that after that your current ignition runs well enough. What kind of coils are you using? How many mS dwell are they getting? I got myself one of these...

    Swap front seats L <--> R ?

My driver's side front seat is not so good anymore and the passenger side is pretty good. Besides the adjustable lumbar support on the driver's seat, is there any difference between the two? That is to say, can I just leave the runners in place and unbolt and swap the seats?
