    I'd keep the softer ones. The hard ones would have had shrunk a bit and hence have less 'crinkles'. Hard leather is more likely to crack and not as comfy.

    I tried with a file and gave up after about 10 minutes, went down to bunnings and picked up a dremel... Im not sure i'd use an angle grinder either, but the dremel works well.

    putting a steering wheel from a VR into a VN

    I'd think a vn wheel wont fit on a vr. vr fits fine on vn, but theres an inch gap between the wheel and the column plastic. If you find your horn stops working, put your fingers in the gap and push the clock spring back towards the dash. I found mine moved out and stopped working.

    vx auto in vs?

    The bellhousing will apparently not clear your exhaust without some modification. I was told the vx has some electronics in the box that the vs has a separate box for, and that it wouldnt be worth the effort if it did end up working.

    I suspect you would need to go custom made to get something significantly stiffer at standard height. Kings etc might have a HD range that suit, you would have to check. Else aurora/industrial springs or similar places would be able to help you.

    I had a s1 vn berlina with ~400k on the clock, now ive got a s1 vs calais with a 175k and a freshly rebuilt engine. Both completely stock, both auto, im confident the vn would own it till 60, and most likely still have it to 100. Past that, the vs would be winding it back in pretty quickly.

    I would suggest you clean up around the sump and try to stop it with silicone or something first, or just to find out where its coming from. My vn didnt have any of the rope seal left and it didnt leak, so i dont think the rear main is going to cause a big leak...

    Are you sure they are 7s? I thought all SV5000 rims were 8s. I think most people run 225/50s on 7 inch rims. I have walkinshaw rims (7s) with 225/50s and the tyres seem to be wearing ok. I think from factory the 7" rims came with 205/55 rubber, so maybe its better. 225s will protect your rims...
