Drivers side power window off guides/channel ?

Were they rivets from the factory? I fixed this on mine and blamed the dodgy previous owner - should I have blamed the dodgy factory ?

    putting 6x9s under parcel shelf

If you've cut out any section oid the parcel shelf out then you're in trouble - that's illegal and your car can be failed for it. No more donuts for you! I mounted 6x9's on my rear parcel shelf in those black plastic pods - not the most attractive solution but I didn't have to cut anything and...

VR stuggles to start when warm??

Check the fuel diaphragm (do a search here) - it's at the end of the injection rail. Pull the vacuum hose off. if there's petrol in it - it's cactus.) - if it is broken then the engine will be flooding when it is warm. This happened to mine & that was the culprit.

V8 Transplants - Need new Dash cluster???

You'll need a lot more than that! You also need the V8 front cross-member etc. ... Do a search - this has been covered before. The verdict by those that have done it - sell the V6 & buy a V8. At the very least - canabilise a wreck with a V8 - you will have all the parts you need. Good luck!

The ultimate VR/VS fuel usage research page

My Economy looks a lot like Koontz's. Stock VR Calais, mostly just me (no mates - boohoo), just outside peak hour, inner-city BUT only 15k's each way to work so a lot of that is while the engine is cold & running rich. Driven moderately. A/c - climate control on all the time (it's bloody...

    Calais vs Berlina

VR Calais series 1 only has 1 airbag. It has steering audio controls but the cd stacker must have been an option. The variable steering will spoil ya - very light when you're pottering around. The alloy wheels were different too, I think. There might be an extra light or 10 in the interior...

so whats everyones electronic background here?

I once built an AlfaSud. Still the best handling car I have ever driven but a wiring nightmare. They only use about 4 colours and the wire can go into the loom one colour and gauge only to emerge in a surprise location in a completely different colour and gauge. That how I learned to use a...

    rev limiter V6 vp

You like loud, expensive BANGs ? I've never thought of the ol Buick as a revver. nope
  10. D

    VS V6 strange grinding noise.

Overdrive clicks in at about 90kmh & I reckon that climbing hills at those revs with overdrive gearing is probably a bit of an 'ask'. I eventually got a fault code-68 (transmission slipping) from the grinding noise and the cruise control has dropped out on a few ocassions. Funny thing is it...

    fuel consumption

Same here. I'm getting about 15l/100km in stop-start on an inner-city-suburbs 15km each-way trip (so a lot of that is when the engine is still in the cold cycle) & about 8-9l/100 km on the freeway. Momentum is the big thing with fuel economy in these - they are pretty heavy & accelerating all...

    Hey all...

These cars are 10 years old. such is life - you either lose the money in depreciation (new car) or repairs (old car). My VR has cost me over $4k in repairs inthe last 18 months but it is actually a really good car to drive. a VT or VX would have cost me a lot more, in total. Moral of the...

    VS V6 strange grinding noise.

My VR V6 Calais has done this - it's probably splippage in the auto &/or lock-up torque converter. watch the tacho next time it happens. try it uphill and see if you can coax it to repeat the behaviour. Check the fault code after the next time the engine light comes on - it will probably tell...

Loom Between Alternator and Battery - Please Advise

I suspect the bean counters, they will be first up against the wall when the revolution comes. Hey, if the cars are perfect leaving the factory then why are we here at this forum?
  15. D

Loom Between Alternator and Battery - Please Advise

The fuse should be rated at either the capacity of the cable of the capacity of the alternator - whichever is LESS.

    Buying VR Calais

Grandad's got a cat-back? sure sure. remember, just cos it says it done 125,000 don't mean it has. Check the heads & valley gaskets - look for oil & water stains. mine are weepy but they'll just have to stay that way til it blows. Could be worse - if it was a Ford it would have blown by now...

VS v6 owners check this out

Common on all of them. There's be no harm in replacing or at least paralleling an extra thick-gauge wire - the originals are woefully inadequete. Don't forget good insualtion - I'm gunna run one in flexible conjute. I measured a .55 volt drop from the alternator to the battery with everythig...

Loom Between Alternator and Battery - Please Advise

Run the thickest cable you can. Pay good attention to insulation - you don't want it to chafe through and short out or you could very-well have a fire on your hands. I just strung a cable between the battery +'ve terminal and the Main fuse block and gain an extra volt on the dashboard under full...

    ???Battery Light??

If you have a trip computer, hold the "set" button while you turn on the engine & start the car. The press the "mode" button & you should see a readout for engine volts. This will let you know how well the charging system is working. check the connector on the top of the altenator for corrosion...

    Power Windows Problem

Contact Cleaner for power window switches. My power window switches were dodgy. Got hold of a can of contact cleaner from Dick Smiths (less than $20) & gave them a good soaking - working fine now. Soak them and work the the switches to flush the grit out. Take the switches out of the car as...

Leaves in internal fan on VR

Also - open the air intake flap & stick the vacuum down there - it sucked out half a forest in my VR - aircon blows much harder now.. The intake is on the passenger's side - it just rolls open.

    Leaves In Aircon VN

Also - Open the intake flap on the passenger's side (it just rolls open) & feed the vacuum hose into it. Jiggle it around while it's sucking & have a listen to all the forestry getting sucked out of the fan. It made a HUGE difference to my VR - blows lots more air now. Hurrah ! Thanks for the...

    power/ economy mode.

VR Calais V6 - power just seems to hold the gears longer. Interestingly, fuel economy around town seems the same in either mode. The aircon is colder in power mode in slow traffic cos the poor ol compressor must be a little tired - more revs=more pressure... nice on a hot day

help with doing the harmonic balancer bolt

This works! Well, it worked for me. Thanks Dr Bob.
  26. D

    how hot should vs run

Mine is normal then. Stays on the 1st notch on the gauge with the A/C on, apart from creeping up a notch or 2 cos it's 45 degrees today and the A/C was running flat out. Mine has a newradiator + water pump etc 6 months ago. VR Calais V6.
  27. D

    VS V6 Starting harshly

check the harmonic balancer. Mine died - dounded like it was dropping a valve when it started. Look for cracks / splits in the rubber on it. Search the forums for 'harmonic balancer' for more clues. Look at the fuel filter too. good luck cheers :) DSB

    WHY are commodores always breaking?

Fords are worse - ask any mechanic how many heads etc the replace on the equivalent Fords & Holdens. My mechanic hates them.

    Help!! Terrible rattling!

Death Rattle. My VR V6 was making a helluva racket at idle & had a distinctive clunk on start-up & shutdown. I assumed the worst (timing chain... death etc.) until having a look around this forum. Then I checked the harmonic balancer. Bloody big crack in the rubber all the way around & perished...

    Harmonic Balancer

Vibration at idle. My VR V6 developed a helluva racket at idle all of a sudden. This was accompanied by a distinctive 'clunk' on start-up & shutdown. Climbed under it with a short hose to do the stethescope thing & diagnosed a timing chain cos the noise was at the bottom of the motor & appeared...

    What did you pay?? (Bored)

$5400 for a 94 VR V6 Calais 6 months ago - 180K. Shoulda looked a little closer at buying time cos I given it a new cooling system, power steering & valley gasket & KYB shocks since then. Otherwise, she's a beaut. Climate control is worth the price of admission alone. I want a V8 now, of course.
  32. D

Looking at VR Berlina... what to check ?

Valley Gasket on the V6 I had to replace the valley gasket on mine soon after I bought it. No coolant inhibitor is a warning sign - it has a strong smell if it leaks. They like new steering racks & pumps too but that's not a bank-breaker. Just have a good long unemotional look.

    attn:vr calais owners!!!!!!!!!

Accordign to my trip computer, I get about 14-ish l/100km around town (inner city - no freeways) - was getting 17.5 on an 8km start-stop commute, about 8-9 l/100km on the freeway. Interestingly, adding a trailer made freeway consumption nearly double (not a very aerodynamic trailer) but the...

    heavy duty shocks

I replaced my entire cooling system. It takes about 10 minutes for it to warm up, gently driven but ti does reach & stay at operating temperature.. There's about 12 litres of coolant in there & an efficient modern engine doesn't generate as much excess heat as older ones running gently when...

    Vk Heater Controls

Before you tear it apart ... bundle yourself upside-down in the passenger side and peer up into the centre console/dash with a torch. The control cable for the heater valve is accessible from there. It should be clipped into place so the outer (black covering) stays still & the inner moves with...

What do you run your car on?

I run 98 octane with valve additive in my VK 202 EFI. Seems to prefer Caltex 98 or BP. It's harder to start on Optimax & runs a little rougher. I always carry a 9/16" spanner for some "mechanical advance" on the dizzy. It's a slow dog on anything less than 98 octane. With octane additives you...

What should i get VR or VS?

These cars are over 10 years old so the individual differences between the cars will far outweigh their differences when brand new. An always-garaged, well-maintained VR with 150k will be better than a VS ex-taxi that has been to the moon & back & never had an oil change. Get the prices...

rebuild or drop different engine in??? what should i do

You might wanna make some enquiries about insurance before you do this ... it could be more economical to trade it in on a Ferrari. You'd definitely need a new chip (dynotuned) - as for engine work, the more you spend the longer it will last. Faster car needs better brakes too. More...
