poss ur injectors are needed of cleaning cause when the fuel get very low the pump tries to pick up anything it can so it will pick up the crap on the bottom of the tank might need a flushing of the fuel system

could be ur fuel tank sender on the fritz the metal connections could be f@#^d pull it out and give it a good clean or poss best of replacing it also get the wiring checked too

yer i had the same problem check all hoses and radiator my problem was 1 of the heater hose near the firewall also check to see if you have water in ya oil too

yo yer could be your head gasket but also get your head pressure checked too cause the heads are common in vl's to blow its a long and expensive job too sometimes it is easier to do the whole lot cause if ya do a head gasket and down the track the head goes your up for more and the gasket...

if it is steam smoke it is your head or gasket that is cracked if it is smoke its your valve stems seals

also check ur injectors they need cleaning every so often
