Thanks. Bloody hell.

I used to do my own and then would get a break on labour so I've lost track.
Pension means everything seems expensive but that really has surprised me.
Not when you receive a factory parts warranty and the fitting is guaranteed.

Ebay gear can be a gamble if the mechanic has to guarantee the work.

I'm in a one shed tiny town. Lucky the local bloke will be flexible for locals.

In this scenario, the mechanic only guarantees the fitting is correct.....They check it works as per normal, but if it fails they hold no responsibility for replacement of the item....They might fit another one for free, but you'd have to be very fortunate for that to happen, when they don't supply the part.

Wow super bargain. I am no mechanic but I have replaced an alternator before, at the advice of a friendly RACV attendant. The worst part by far was getting the gasket off, and that wasn't too difficult.

You've done well mate.

Gasket? What sort of vehicle were you working on?

Dang... and I was told scoring my VXii Berlina for $2300 was a great deal, even after needing about $400 in work for Roadworthy (would have been more, but I did some of it myself). Mechanic told me that it was in "Spectacular condition for its age" and everything... ^^;

And in all seriousness, probably still is a 'good deal', but I can't help but feel a *little* ripped off reading about your lucky score... ^^;

Never come across a gasket with an alternator

Well I'm disappointed. Have had this $100 car for nearly two years now, done over 40,000 k without spending anything on it except for oil changes and now I need front wheel bearings. Bargains just aren't what they used to be :cool:
