As the title says, next lot of annual leave I want to spend about $1200 adding bolt-on performance to my VX, whilst still keeping it legal. At the moment my plan is 1.9 or 1.98 Roller ($610/650) rockers and a CAI from MACE ($270), along with a Catback exhaust (~$300). I may look into extractors down the road, but at the moment it's all about things I can do myself. I'm also leaning away from Plenum spacers and throttle bodies as they are illegal in Victoria.

Does this plan seem worth it to you guys?

How are they illegal? Mace themselves are victorian.

Save that $1200, til you get around $2,700. Castlemaine Rod Shop are doing SC14 charger kits for that price.

Save the money then sell the car and buy a v8 or turbo 6

Otherwise, a good high ratio rocker set and full exhaust with mcai (monaro cai) will get you minimal power gains

If youre chasing serious power, modding a v6 isnt a good start, unless youre willing to dump serious cash into it for stroking, serious headwork and forced induction (15-25+k)

    Just my 2c

Save the money, sell your car and you'll have $1300 to put towards a new car.

Or. If you want to get more performance and stay legal (on P Plates?) do a proper service, plugs, oils, leads etc.

Moving to a V8 really makes sense in your case. $1200 on top of your trade might just get you the goods.

I'd go the rockers and exhaust then a good tune.. Cai are a waste of time because the factory air intake works good.. You could always turbo it as well..

Couldn't turbo it for $1200 :p otherwise all the 3.8's would be dosing down the street

To be honest the car means more to me than a V8. It was given to me by my old man and has a lot of sentimental value. I intend to get a V8 in a few years when insurance will be cheaper for me and I have a better income (just finished uni), but even then I'll keep and maintain this car (having an old wagon is great for taking the dogs to the beach and such, things you wouldn't want to do in a brand new car). I'm not chasing huge performance boosts, I'd be ecstatic with 10%. It's more about fuel economy from the CAI, a better note from the exhaust and proving to myself that I'm actually capable of doing this stuff.

I understand where your coming from......but what everybody is trying to tell you here, is that your wasting your money on something you probably won't even be happy about.

Unless you have big $$$ to throw around, then that's fine. And if your worried about economy you'll be surprised how a tuned LS1 uses less fuel than an ecotec.

    Just a thought.....Good luck!

If you plan on getting a new car soon, just spend that cash on maintenence.

A catback wont do anything compared to what a good service will.

Why makes you think the spacers are illegal in Victoria ?

And the car has had a good service, also had a new engine last year which probably cost more than the car is worth, and new shocks and springs in the back, among other things. the money I'm spending on the interior is probably more than that. I know I could easily sell it and save for a V8 but i love the car too much to do that. If you guys think I won't notice ANY difference from these mods i'll probably just do the MACE CAI, and spend the rest on the interior or put it into my new wheels fund.

You'll just feel a light increase in the top with the cai and exhaust. And alittle in the bottom with the spacers.

You'll certainly be wondering where all your money went

Already replaced a lot of rubber, just some at the front end that isn't all that worn. Might get a dent pulled, next year I'll probably get a respray depending on cost (Same colour).

Considering you like your car & want to keep it, then fitting some HRRR will give a noticeable increase in mid range free revs. These are are a great DIY bang for buck mod, & you may want to get new pushrods (ask Steve). Extractors are something you can do yourself as well, ask NAAF on here for a price on a full system (that includes cat back). CAI could wait for a few months when you can justify the cost, either-ways a better breathing engine will give you some satisfaction on the street for the VX.

Just do visual mods. Lower, wheels and maybe a catback if you want some noise. Keep that car and buy another one that's turbo or an 8 and dump your money into that one where you'll have more performance for your dollar if you do your homework.

Suspension or even stereo might be the best place to put those $$$.

I'm with the rest though, put your pennies away for a nice V8.

I wouldn't worry about that, that's only EPA regulations. Most of the stuff they list is virtually undetectable and it's all completely unenforceable on a large scale. It just gives them the ability to defect extensively modified cars in a number of areas.

mate, 3.9 diff gears will be the best bang for your buck than what any of those other mods will give you.
