Whipped the d/a sander over the fiberglass filler, then primed it and put on some lightweight gear.

IMG_3036.jpg

Then d/a sanded that again

IMG_3042.jpg

And the guard got blocked back

IMG_3038.jpg

And for anyone wondering what special tools i use or what blocking back is,
here's a couple of tools from my arsenal. Bits of foam.

IMG_3039.jpg

^ this is how you get your panels flat, with these things, a bit of technique and a keen eye.

The door just got a thin coat of primer, then getting a skim coat of filler and block down,
then both the guard and door are getting a lick of highbuild.

Cheers.

elless1,

There's a ton of backyard panelbeaters & spraypainters here in Port & they do awful jobs. John who owns his business (he & his son painted my ute) see all the rotten jobs that come through. I see John & the guys every day & I get to see some great cars & learn a few bits & pieces along the way. Sometimes I help them when they have a fair amount of work going on by detailing a few cars here & there.

John has told me what your mate has said to you & you should ask him about NRMA & how they are now dealing with smash repair businesses. John was a preferred repairer for 25 years & when the NRMA came up with new contracts asking the smash repairers to take less money but have more work, John told them where to go. Only 2 smash repairers in Port signed up & they are working on extreme high volume for little profit & the work is substandard as they end up going to John to get the repairs done properly. A couple of weeks ago a bloke went through one of these repairers & they couldn't match the colour on a bumper. This bloke argued with the NRMA & in the end it went to John. The bumper was pulled off & they didn't fix the reo or other panels behind the bumper. This is how the new NRMA model works.

John & Jason have done a lot of project cars & the latest one in the shop is a 1989 Toyota Supra A70 with a heavily modded twin turbo engine which goes like stink. The guy who owns it is a panel beater/painter, but knows John & Jase are great with their work.

Even though you have your medical issues, you're doing a bloody good job as you've done on everything else I've seen you do. Doesn't matter if it takes time, just as long as you keep up with the quality of your work & you get a buzz out of it.

Thanks risky, ive seen a few rough jobs and the worse thing about them is it makes it harder for the next guy to repair it.
I'm sure a few panel beaters would look at my work and think i was a bit of a hack.lol. I class myself as a decent
backyarder ;) I'm hoping to help anyone reading it that might be having a crack to try and do a half descent job.
Instead of the old chicken wire and plaster tricks from yesteryear. haha

Got a bit primer porn here.

There's a bit of **** in the primer and she still needs some filler and a few sandings with the blocks but the basics are there.
More to the point i got it in primer and together while there was still light and before the rains.

Thanks for looking.

It's only painted on the top ;)

i'll roll it around for you.

Just joking, the tires and rims are **** and getting scrapped mate, i can imagine your frustration.lol.
When i need to i can mask up nice, i'm just being lazy. I did tuckpointing for a couple of years and
went through about 20 rolls a day when we where lining up a wall, no stranger to masking tape, just
lazy and a bit disabled. (it's my car after all and not a job) lol.

Who is shazz? Just for my records. haha

I can tell you now mate that both John & Jase here are impressed with your work. Both have been in the business for decades. It's a pity that you dont live at my side of the country.

Thanks risky, you dont know how much it means to hear that.

So this next pic was meant to go up at the start showing why the tailgate was swapped.
Years ago some young donkeys took a liking to putting fireworks in mailboxes and other things,
one of the things was my tailgate hence the big dent.

IMG_3001.jpg

Decided to jack up each wheel individually and give them a wiggle to see if i could find anything obvious as
to where the vibration was coming from. The last wheel i checked (rear pass. side) was loosey goosey. bigtime.
Very lucky the wheel didnt come off.

After hours of swearing and cursing the drum finally came off and i could get the hub and bearing assembly out.

IMG_3052.jpg

To my surprise the bearings are held in by plastic bearing carriers. Needless to say they where destroyed.

Decided to give the rolla a wash for the first time in four years. I swapped the locking mech from the tailgates
and gave it a quick lick of primer too. Also spent many hours peeling the black **** off the doors. Theyre not perfect
underneath and i'm tossing up doing a full respray but anyway... looks better without the strips imo

The bearing races where trashed as well but luckily they now make sealed bearing
units as a retrofit. Problem is you have to cut the old races off the hub and do a bit
of stuffing around. Ive got the hub at my mates who has a press to sort out refitting
the new bearing because i cant be stuffed doing it in the driveway with a hammer and wood.

Bought a new set of shoes for the back too so next week i'll be doing new bearings and brakes on
the back end and redoing the front brakes and regreasing/replacing bearings. The front brakes
are from the half cut i got the motor from (same a v6 camry i think) with slotted rotors.
hopefully i can just get away with pads in the front.

Thanks for looking.

For anyone that didnt see this pic in the other thread, this is what she used to look like ten years ago when i first did it up.

DSC00282.jpg

Hoping to get her back to this level. Still got the rims out the back too that sat on gumtree for a few years, with nothing
but time wasters coming around. Must have been a sign that they didnt sell.

Cheers.

I pulled the other hub off to put in new bearings and the old ones looked like new, but got
replaced like the other side with a sealed bearing unit.
IMG_3074.jpg

IMG_3075.jpg

Below is a pic of the shaft and the rear bearing race that has to be cut off.
IMG_3076.jpg

And below again is the new sealed bearing.

IMG_3077.jpg

The brakes got a new set of shoes.

IMG_3079.jpg

Heres the hubs with the new bearings in

IMG_3081.jpg

The drums got wire buffed and hit with some black ceramic paint i had left over
from doing the extractors on the ute.

IMG_3082.jpg

IMG_3083.jpg

Next job will be sorting out the paint and a few small mechanical issues.

Nice job there mate, I would have thought you'd upgrade the rear brakes to disc.

The wheels you had are suited for the rockin' rolla Corolla.
