Recently purchased a 1995 hsv Senator 215i manual.,with engine Number VL631411.
When I took in in for servicing ,had engine number checked,it was different VG218570.
It had all the fancy 215i gear on the top.
Has anyone got the knowledge of what VL or VG mean before the number,or what size engine it is .Thanks

Chuck your VIN into there and see what comes up. Nothing external on the motor to distinguish a 215 from a 185 from memory bar the different engine cover.

185 VS Senators are supposed to have engine numbers with a VU prefix.
215 VS Senators are supposed to have engine numbers with a VT prefix.

185 VR Senators are supposed to have engine numbers with a VU prefix
215 VR Senators are supposed to have engine numbers with a VL prefix.

According to "HSV The Innovators 1991-1995.

Perhaps your car has had an engine replacement somewhere along the line. What is the number on the registration certificate?

So it's probably a bog stock 304 with the 215 engine covers. Dodgy. Hope you didn't pay much for it.

With the engine change it's hard to know what is actually inside the engine. How does it drive? One quick check would be to pull out the PCM and check the memcal. If the engine specification was changed the tune would have needed to be altered or it probably wouldn't drive to great.

....

There is no difference between the engine prefix for VR/VS manuals and autos as far as I can tell.

However, I seem to recall that when engines are rebuilt under warranty, and the engine block needs to be replaced, the new block already has its own engine serial number, which is identified by a different serial number to the standard range. The VR 185/215 blocks are essentially the same except for additional clearancing for the stroker crank on the 215 models.

Holden or HSV may be able to tell you whether or not the engine was replaced under warranty.
