[QLD] 2001 vx commodore rough start

hi all I have a 2001 vx commodore ecotec v6. when I start it after its been sitting for a while and the engine is cold it will idle very low and rough for a few soconds like its going to stall then will rev up a little past the normal mark and then settle back down at the normal level. when its warm after driving it starts fine.
I don't want to spend the money for a mechanic to find the problem so I thought Id ask here. any help would be appreciated.
