I have a 2004 VY2 CX8 Adventra and I recently had the ABS warning come on intermittently for several weeks and then come on constantly with the orange ABS Light. I plugged my trusty scan tool in and it brought up the C0550 which is pretty much a communication error with the ABS Module. I pulled the offending unit out so I could see the part number (689 389 50725 7) and see if it could be repaired or if I would have to replace.

After some research I found quite a few companies repair these type of units as it is pretty common for the soldered links inside the unit to break. I rang around some of the companies and for around $250 they can pull them apart and resolder them with fairly good results………… except for the adventra or cross 8 units. As soon as I mentioned the 689… number most said they did not have great success with these ones as it is often the processor within it that is cactus and then they are throw away. They are more complicated due to the all-wheel drive and differential braking system.
So my partner rang a heap of wreckers with no success as the units are quite rare and go quickly.
I also scoured the net for second hand or aftermarket but the numbers don’t seem to match anything I could find.

We then rang Holden (and I was glad I was sitting down) gave them the VIN and found that the part was going to cost me about $ 800 from my local Holden parts joint in Townsville. There was only one module listed for that model. They had no stock and would have to order in from Brisbane. I wasn’t real happy with the price and rang the Holden parts place in Brisbane (same mob the local guys order from) and found that I could get it about $ 60 landed cheaper. Good on you local guys – you just lost me as a customer for your mark up.
I ordered the unit and when it arrived I fitted it up and the ABS warning is gone. I didn’t need to erase codes. It has a different number (459261 0 273 004 989 Holden part number - 92148159) so must be one that has superseded the original.

As this was a frustrating few weeks trying to identify the unit and get hold of one I have compiled the following information to assist anyone else trying to sort out their ABS problems.

You need to match the number on your module to the replacement (unless it has been superseded - check with Holden) or you will have issues.

Feel free to correct or add to this list if you want to - it may help someone else.

Fantastic idea to start making a thread on this.

The concept needs to be applied to the SDM, since these sometimes fail.. and is extremely difficult to locate one with the exact same partnumber.
It is upsetting that different Holdens will have way different markups, but expected in a franchise.

I am surprised you didnt try an ebay unit for less?

Would have love to use a cheap second hand ebay unit but unfortunately none matched. Not too many second hand ones due to the AWD which uses automatic brake differential (ABD) software and electronic brake force distribution (EBD) to achieve desired levels of traction across all wheels" which links into the ABS module processor.

VZ LX8 Adventra
I replaced mine several months ago. A huge pain in the arse finding a replacement. Like yours, mine (VZ V8 Adventra) is a 12 coil module.

Unfortunately the first 3 digits were unreadable on the old module. I'll update them when I get a chance to have a look at the 2nd hand replacement that's in the car.

ADVENTRA VZ V8 5.7lt GEN III AWD XXX 491 50206 6

The ABS Modulator/Hydraulic unit is 92179616

VY Crewman X8
I was getting a random ABS alarm on my 2/2004 VY Crewman Cross 8.
Tried all the wheel sensors and connections etc. The alarm was C0550 ECU/CCU Malfunction, which apparently indicates a communication issue with the module, not a crook sensor or anything.
After much searching and investigation I find that there is no aftermarket supplier of these ABS modules. Speeds do the genuine one, and so do Holden, for about the same price.
Because of the cross track traction control system these are 12 valve systems, like some German cars, and of course are unique to the Crewman Cross 8, and perhaps the other AWD Commodores
The dry joint problems that happen to the others, and can be fixed, are not the same problems that happen to these. The couple of repairers that would bother to reply told me they’ve never had success fixing these ones and they weren’t willing to have a go.
So it’s Holden, $868.00 in Adelaide. At least it’s not a Mercedes or a BMW, can you imagine?
The new one had 1 273 004 989 and Holden P/No 92148159 on the box. BOSCH 559131 0 273 004 989 on the module. All those numbers have changed over the years apparently.

It’s easy to change out, plenty of instructions on you tube to show you how to do that.
Works great now. I suspect the heat from under the bonnet causes the electronics to fail eventually.
These types of cars will never become “vintage”. In 50 years they’ll all be “static display only” I expect. Sad really.
Cheers
Tony

COMMODORE VY V8 5.7lt NO TRACTION CONTROL 0273004588

COMMODORE VZ V6 3.8lt 0265800318

I have had an ABS error for a while now, lately got an SRS fault and my fuel consumption is all over the show, up above 58l/100km this morning I gather that a faulty ABS module can throw off all sorts of side effects in the electronic management system.

So my mechanic replaced a wheel Speed sensor now he says it is an ABS solenoid fault. He freely admits he doesn't have a clue what to do now except replace the whole ABS with a new unit for $1000. Bout what the car is worth.

I have been researching and Found the above. I removed the black plastic ABS module and found the part number that Bosch cleverly concealed under the unit.

I have a VY V6 Executive with no traction control. I have the 0273004588 which, According to the above, I find should belong to a V8 VY I suspect my correct part is the 0273004589. I don't know if my car came with this module or some previous owner swapped it out.

Can anyone comment on this issue?

Thanks guys,

Simon

Thanks 186565, very informative, but I hope that I will not have to use this info.
There is no mention of the V6 Adventra or Cross6 on your list. Do you know if they are the same ?

That will be the fate of any car that relies on electronics. If the tin ants don't get them, any thing prior to a VK should still be going around after current cars have used up all their electrons.

Holden still have a number of parts floating about. Some have gone & are hard to get but I always try my local Holden blokes first. Yes, you will get a degree of markups on items from your local dealer but it's best to shop around to get the product you want.

Classic example I had recently was for SS molded mudflaps. My local guys couldn't find them anywhere on the system. I found a set on eBay from a Holden dealer then went back to my local guys who ordered it in from the other dealer. Instead of paying $38 plus postage which would have taken days, I paid $31 all up & got it the next day.

V2 CV8 Monaro and VF SSV Redline
COMMODORE VT-VX V8 5.7lt GEN III 0273004389 as per your list will also suit V2 Monaro same vintage. Not sure if important but I have only used this model in Auto, someone who's got a manual may be able to chime in there.

These cars will also accept 0273004486

Best way is to ring your Holden parts people and give them your vin and they should be able to look up what part your vehicle should have. I found it wasn't straight forward when finding a replacement due to super-session of the parts. I would fit the same type module (0273004588) - It may be a case of the V8 unit fits both. The module ending in "89" looks like it may be a traction control model. If you can get your hands on a tech 2 scanner it will tell you what module you have as well. Regards Daryl.
