Hate to burst your bubble me Fu but I have swapped out BCM's in a Captiva and had no vin related issues running the Tech 2 after.
But we are discussing Commodores, not Craptivas,...

A scan tool isn’t some sort of miraculous alien like tool that automatically analyses every wire and sensor.

What a scan tool does is it finds logged data from modules. Not all scan tools read the data correctly.

If a sensor has read data that is outside the parameters of ideal or safe operation it logs a fault. That may be caused by the sensor or it maybe caused by the sensor doing it’s job.
Not all fault codes logged trigger a MIL on the dash. Not all scan tools will find those. Not all accurately read Holden codes which can be unique, therefore showing something else all together.

This is a classic case of fault diagnosis and can be done by an auto electrician or a best by someone specialising in diagnostics.

Where is the fault? Well that can only be done by following through logical checks and processes to someone trained. They will back probe plugs and test circuits to find data that substantiates the fault diagnoses. A high end interface will drill into module and sensor data, provide wave form data of signals and have some diagnostic flow charts and service tech bulletins. They are nothing like a cheap scan tool.

The other alternative is to

and watch the bank balance drop.
Might need to update your scan tool because mine has 5 volt references, low voltage references, open circuits and even schematic diagrams and before you ask, I have a Tech 2, MDI 2 and an Autel MaxiSys MS906

Well I hope it does.
When people say “I have a scan tool” they have something off eBay or Jaycar that cost $35 and won’t see half the codes logged or recognise the Holden codes. They think they are what you have.

Decent interfaces are what are needed to poke around in the nooks and crannies.

A scan tool v a full function interface device are, to me, two very different things.

What? So your saying you grabbed a BCM and just plugged it in and it worked without having to set it up for the car or do anything???

Why was the tech2 plugged in after if you just put a replacement in and nothing needs doing?

Here's this from the Factory Manual. Step 8, reprogram the BCM.

If the VIN in the BCM doesn't match the VIN on all the other linked modules, that car is not going to run.

He stated the BCM swap was for a Craptiva...

Sorry, it turns out the ECU and BCM were swapped out of that car.
