    Hi I have a SV6 with 94,000 K's on it.
Today after starting i got a engine warning alarm, i took it straight to Holden left it running and the plugged a computer into it which gave a code P0008 or something like that. They said Timing chain could be stretched would have to leave with them for 1 to 2 days.
    Anyone experienced this?

Lenny. Thank god still under warranty

The other week the radiator split inside and the contents of the radiator ended up in the gear box.
Thanks Holden, I got a new gearbox and Radiator.
    What Next?

Pray the engine blows up next, that way you are 94,000km better off. :)

I had the same issue on a VE SV6 at 52,000 km after I dropped in to Ferntree Gully Holden to show them the dash alarm message (1st visit). Ferntree Gully Holden replaced the timing chain. After leaving the car with them for 1 week (I was overseas) I picked it up on the Friday night (2nd visit), then found a pool of oil on my garage floor the following day. I took it back to FTG Holden (3rd visit) and they kept it for another 2 days to replace a 'faulty' gasket. I got it back the following Tuesday night and when I got home to check it I found the alloy cover on top of the engine was covered in burnt oil, and there were 2 plastic retaining clips missing. I went back Wednesday AM (4th visit) to have the cover cleaned and retainers replaced. 1 day later there was a constant squeal from the front of the engine. When I returned to FTG Holden on Friday (5th visit) I was advised the power steering pulley required replacing and that this was an ongoing issue. They also needed to order the part from GMH. Of course I asked why this was not replaced when they did the timning belt (or 'faulty' gasket) they said that GM would not allow the warranty claim if the pulley was replaced before it failed (despite it being known this was a common issue). The final (6th visit) trip to FTG Holden resoloved all of my issues at that time. Good luck Lenny66 .......................

    Hi Guys,
Just bought an 06 SV6 and it now has the same issue. took it to Holden and because its done 120K they have said its not covered. I fought with them and they are going to speak to Holden head office and see if they will cover the costs. i found some of the GM bulletins relating to this issue but no Holden ones... :(
I'll just have to wait and see if they cover it.

HI Guy's ..They fixed it under Warranty...the chains were stretched by 4mm. The new chains are a revised version that the round bit in the middle is now 9mm diameter instead of 7mm.

    Its a known Problem

Actually it can produce any of about 8 codes. see GM bulletin below

    H08-0601-01: Timing Chain Stretch and/or DTCs P0008, P0009,
    P0016, P0017, P0018, P0019 (Middle East) - Timing
    Chain Stretch and/or DTCs P0008, P0009, P0016, P0017,
    P0018, P0019 (Middle East)
    Timing Chain Stretch and/or DTCs P0008, P0009, P0016, P0017,
    P0018, P0019
    Affected Models
2007 Chevrolet Caprice, Lumina (Middle East)
    with 3.6L LE0 Engine
Built Prior to Engine Number H071380576
A condition may occur with the HFV6 engine that will cause the MIL
    to illuminate and may log DTCs P0008, P0009, P0016, P0017, P0018 and
P0019. Codes are set when the ECM detects that camshafts on either
bank of the engine are misaligned with the crankshaft. For a more
complete description of code setting parameters, refer to SI.
Important: This condition may affect the 7.7 mm pitch timing
chain, installed in engines after the following engine
    number: H053340001.
The 9.525 mm pitch timing chain installed in earlier HFV6 engines
    is not affected.
The customer will only notice an engine warning light in
the instrument panel. This condition does not cause any obvious
driveability concerns or any abnormal engine noises.
There was an issue with the time chain manufacturing process
that caused, in a small number of engines, the chain links to
be outside design specifications. Over time, this may result in
    chain elongation.
The degree of chain elongation will depend of the number of
affected links and the drive cycle of the engine during its life.
Typical expectation is that ECM detectable chain elongation
would occur in early engine life (i.e. 10,000 to 20,000 km).
If the vehicle meets the criteria explained, with any of
the previously mentioned DTCs logged in the ECM, the standard
    service instructions for DTCs P0016, P0017, P0018, P0019 and P0008
and P0009 must be followed, prior to any diagnostic work being done
on the timing chains. Refer to Engine Controls & Fuel – 3.6L,
    DTC P0016, P0016, P0018, P0019 or document # 1985724 in SI or
    Engine Control & Fuel – 3.6L, DTC P0008, P0009 or document #1985715
    in SI.
ONLY the timing chains need to be replaced.
Idlers, guides and tensioners do not require replacement.
However, inspect the guides for any abnormal wear and replace
    ONLY if necessary.

Once the original used chains have been removed, check the
free length against new, unused chains to confirm diagnosis. Ensure
that the chains are either laid flat on a bench and pulled
straight with no kinks or hung out straight vertically. Typical
chain elongation observed is a minimum of 3 mm on a doubled-up
    chain, taking an approximate measurement.

Yes but p0008 is most common.

Another stupid decision from Holden we all know about the issue and they still won't fix the problem.
Another reason for people to buy cheap imports!
    Good luck mate.

I just had the sane problem as you guys. My SV6 has only done 74,000kms and the engine warning light came on. I took it to Winter and Taylor Holden an they said stretched timing chains. The lady at the service office took my service book and photocopied all the services which the car has had (all done at holden) and thn proceded with paper to Head office to see if they were going to foot the bill. By the end of the day, she called me back and said that holden was going to pay 33% of the bill. She said that it would cost between $2800 to $3000 for the repairs. Now im not sure whether i trade the car in for a new one or just get it done. Holden should have footed the whole bill because it is their #### up. A bit disappointed with holden but its betterthan nothing.

Hi, I would just like to thank you for your information.
I have a SV6 2006 done 56000kms and my light came on saying check engine. Found out it was a stretch timing chain and was quoted about $2.5-3k to fix. After reading this forum I contacted Holdern in Manukau which informed me to call Rob at Davie Motors East Tamaki.
The car was all done under warranty with new parts and fluids and also got the best service.
They are great and helpful down there. It didnt cost me a cent, if I did not know about this from your website I would be out of pocket. Its great to have sites like this.
    THANKS HEAPS!!!

    I have a 2006 SV6 VE.
Last week the engine warning light came on. Today my brother in law brought around his Garmin GPS that has a ECORoute HD Diagnostics.
I have discovered that it has 2 error codes P0008 & P0017. My Car has 112000km on it and is out of Warranty, so looks like
I will be forking out $3000 for this repair. Will be talking to Holden Dealer first thing Monday.
Hopefully they can fix it before Christmas. Great Christmas present

    Hey guys,

Is there any way of telling if the original timing chain has been replaced? I bought a 07 Lumina with 110,000 on the clock.

As I don't know what the original looked like, does the revised chain have any distinguishing features? Markings? Patterns?

    Cheers.

Go to Holden and ask them to look up the warranty history of the registration. If you're a nice guy they probably wont charge you for it.
