Hi, somewhat new to JustCommodores

did a quick search and found many answers to very similar questions, but i was just hoping to get reassurance :)

I have a 2007 commodore

the engine number on the rego papers is: LE0073330299
and the engine number on the sticker on the heads is: 10HBN H073330299

so im assuming i have a LE0 engine with a engine code of HBN.
i was wondering do i have to get another LE0 HBN, and use all my old sensors etc for it to work ?
or is it any LE0 engine and swapping the sensors etc will work ?

and a sub question - if i wanted to get a HY7 - would i just need the ECU with it for it to work ?

Thankyou in advance for any information.

Yes, Swap the motor out, and use your EXISTING Sensors if you didnt have any DTC's appearing,
But, since the motor is out, may I suggest to do the Oil Pump and Chains,
Believe me, its a lot easier.
and
Yes, but a bit of tweeking for the HY7

LY7 into an LE0 car is almost like an engine conversion in its own right because of the amount of wiring and changes to the engine management.
Would be the same work to drop an LS1 into it, just about.

It has been done, but significant portions of the engines functions are not used and I doubt they’d pass emissions regulations.

To clarify why that is, lets take a look.
LY7 has the variable flow intake manifold. It has an electronic motor controlled by the ECM. It has a connector for it. Then there is the two extra cam sensors which are integral to the engine management of the LY7. Then there are the two extra cam solenoids/phasers, also controlled by the ECM. So change the ECM? Well that has to plug into the engine loom from an LY7, which will also have the extra plugs for the sensors and cam solenoids etc.
That harness includes the fuse panel and terminates inside the vehicle, mainly to the BCM. But the LE0 won't plug into models equiped with the LY7 because they tend to be upspec models which have different BCM's and pin outs for the extra features, like climate control, extra airbags, different seat motors and their memory features. So you start having to think about changing the interior harness to suit the upspec BCM that plays with the ECM and its harness from the LY7 motor. Change the interior features and seats to suit the interior harness etc. Down the rabbit hole you go. Best to have a donor Caiais or Berlina, then it would be a project that moves along as fast as possible.

ok so, upgrading the engine sounds like way to much work when i'm trying to just get it back on the road in a quickish and cheapish way.

thank you very much for covering that.

so i cant just do my LE0 replace with any other LE0,
it "HAS" to be the LE0 - HBN specifically for things to go reasonably smoothly?

sorry for asking it again, still not 100% clear on that part

As long as it’s LE0 it’s fine. The only one that can be an issue is the ‘04 VZ’s that had different cam sensor reluctor.
