I can't say about having HAVAC coming up on screen. But reverse camera has a jack on the back of the HU for this purpose. I have it on mine.

So what about the display on screen for Hvac as you get this on original radio.
Also parking sensors which are shown on screen.
Would these 2 functions still be displayed with an after market unit.
You get something waaaay better. The most annoying feature on series 1 and 2 headunits (which are worse) is hvac info is not easily glanced at. The dual zone Aerpro version is what Holden should have done.

Also nothing needs to be cut, no wiring stuffed about with or panels modified. Plug and play. Even make use of wireless charging that replaces the compartment under the headunit.

All the old stuff can be put in a box and sold with the car or retro fitted back into the car when ever you want.

To get a factory headunit up and running again is going to come in around the same price. Include buying one, then having it reflashed. Then it too may have faults that require repair. Or it might not.

The DVD player is redundant in our Calais. The kids are using the iPads to interact rather than passively watch something. We used to use the DVD player a lot but then they started liking different shows or movies. iPads for the win. It’s just progress.

Also having android auto or Apple CarPlay gives satnav, via Google maps, on a level no Holden Commodore could do from factory. It’s effortless to use with nothing but voice commands to get it working.

Ok
Handy to know.
The rca on back of radio is usually for video/camera but don't know how this would pair with all the original front and rear parking sensors.

Thanks mate.
Yes I do tend to agree with what you are saying but at this stage price for another unit is $200 and re programed for under $100 I figure I'm still in front.
New fascia kits I believe are around $350 cost of another head unit would think around $4 - 500 .
This car is not my daily driver so hence the reason why trying to keep costs down.

This is not directly related but it might help someone down the track.
I have a friend who owns a 2001 Nissan Pulsar and some three or four weeks ago her battery went flat (she left her lights on)
Consequently she had to reset her radio by putting in the pin code, alas it did not work so she took it to the local Nissan dealer where she then waited for them to try and reset her radio. After several attempts and three hours later (yes if you don’t do it correctly and enter a wrong PIN number it can lock out for hours!) the radio just kept showing the ‘error’ code. She was then asked to bring the car back the next day as they would have the auto electrician on board and he was likely to be able to sort the problem.
She returned to the dealer the next day, 25km trip by the way, only to wait another couple of hours to be told they still couldn’t reset the radio!
They then advised she might have to go to a specialist car radio joint. Totally frustrated (she’s in her mid seventies by the way), she came away no better off after two 50km round trips and many hours wasted feeling rather disappointed that they couldn’t fix the problem.
I saw her yesterday and asked if she had fixed her radio? She answered no and that she so missed being able to listen to her CD’s whilst driving,. So I did what most nuff nuffs do when confronted with a problem, I Googled it, and a very nice guy on YouTube told me “switch your ignition to accessories, leave it for up to an hour or more and the error will clear and you will then be able to reset your radio”
This I did, and BINGO! My lady friend was so happy she gave me a big kiss on the cheek and then drove all the way back to the Nissan Dealership and said to them “my friend fixed my radio and he’s a nuff nuff, so what does that make you lot?
It does beg the question!:)

I'm with you, keep it stock replacement. Also helps with resale I reckon, especially as these cars are getting older and stock is king. I can live with some old-school functionality and it only costs 100-150 for a mail order VIN flash, so it's much cheaper.

Yes I agree but many out there with deep pockets may not.
Anyway at this stage we are staying all original without some of the extra features some of the more modern units may have.
The other reason is its not my daily driver so why waste the extra money.

Hi All
So just an update.
Second hand radio was sourced for $200 (great condition) and with radio reprogrammed from (automotive lighting customs) for $100 and everything works a treat.
So I figure $300 is better at this stage of going the aftermarket option which would of been well over $1000.
Thanks for your advice through this journey.

Yeah my full aftermarket system was probably close to $1500 including installation and that's a middle of the road not high end set up. Damn nice bit of kit, but I imagine those with $4k set ups would blitz mine, haha.

Yeah but if we factor in that you love a sing, and are singing along pretty loud while you cruise the winding roads of mountainous Tasmania, it’s going to sound similar to a $4k system.

Throw in some Yodelling in the mountains at a roadside rest stop and your going to bump up that sound quality even more.
