The car only has 90k km on it☹
It's kind of odd then, but I would be looking into a better quality filter in that case, perhaps thinner oil.
Ultimately you'll know within a couple thou KM whether or not the bearings in the lifters have failed; it'll get so bad you won't be able to tolerate it.
How do you have such low mileage on an L98? Did it sit for a few years?

Glad I'm not at that stage yet. The car is gonna have a new cam and lifters in a few weeks. It's just a waiting game until then.
No idea, saw in service log books it had a couple of stints where it went 20k km without oil change.

Yeah I wouldn't worry if I were you. If you're changing cam it's ultimately inconsequential; if you're paranoid change the filter to a high quality one and go with some reputable oil ie. Penrite Full Synth 5w30.

Yeah hoping it's a simple case of replacing the cam, lifters, oil, oil filter and its good to go.
Thanks for the help.
I'm going to be putting up a follow up post with videos of before and after and what the diagnosis was. I couldn't find any good examples of lifter tick in an LS engine on the internet.

2006 VZ Thunder Ute - L76 Auto
You might find this youtube vid. of use.
Also I did quite a bit of research on lifters which might be of interest. Not sure how this forum works but you could try searching my posts re. L76 lifter tick (VZ Thunder). Some good info from others joining the discussion.
- link to my youtube vid of engine noise. Plenty of info via youtube if you search on lifter tick.

Big oil leak from front of the engine, now looking at needing a new a/c belt, harmonic balancer, sump gasket, timing chain cover, timing chain tensioner in addition to whatever is making the ticking noise.

As you've said your minimizing use, but if you do have to drive it, I'd recommend getting clips of the cold start idle, warm idle after at least 10 mins of driving and probably cold and warm driving in cab if you can hear it from in there. If you have access to a video/slr camera with mic, do it with that and set gain/attenuation/volume manually and record from the same distance, it may be overkill for most, but it keeps it apple to apples. Your phone may even have pro video settings.
In all honesty the clip provided doesn't sound much different to mine without the Nulon "special sauce" added and it's sounded like that for the last 150k km's with little worsening. Been worrying for nothing for years! If you want to be horrified by engine sounds to make yourself feel a bit better, look up Ron's piston slap thread on here. 8 f**king cylinders of pure stress for the poor guy. Don't sweat it just yet.
Be well pleased if ours was as quiet as that. L76 with AFM.
