Recently bought a Senator with 50,000 on it.

Getting clunking/thudding from the front end going over speed humps, shaking the steering left and right at about 40kmh (The worst), undulations and turning into driveways at an angle. I cant get it to make any noise turning the wheel lock to lock while stationary. No noise when listening for backlash in the steering rack.

All signs point to strut tops just like my previous commo's but i cant see much wrong with them.

They do have a tiny gap with wheels pointed straight between the top of the strut and the bottom of the top plate of a few mm or so. The nut underneath is visible.

The noise isnt huge but its there. Ive got under the car, shook everything and cant find anything loose. Hoping to the HSV gods its not the MRC shocks...

Shouldn't be a gap.
Replace the strut tops.

Yeah replace strut tops. The std rubber ones are good for 40-50 thousand kays before they collapse and this happens. Use Superpro polyelastomer ones (not polyurethane) to fix for good.
Be prepared for the shocks to be in "replaceable" condition too.

Just don't put Nolathane in it unless you're prepared for your teeth to chatter every time you sneeze in the direction of some sort of bump/corrugation.

I’ll be using Superpro. Ive used them before with my other cars. The MRC shocks will take care of that anyway.

Digging this up again.

Ive replaced the MRC struts, and springs. Still exactly the same. Sometimes is good sometimes it sounds like the suspension is falling out (No joke)

Its electronic. Its like backlash in the strut while the shocks are adjusting. Its too inconsistent to be purely mechanical.

Is there some sort of calibration needed on the MRC system?

Im really over it and wishing i had have just bought that damn C63...

Did you ever get to the bottom of your issue? I'm having the same problems with my VF GTS. Any advice?

I've started to notice this clunk too.

Unfortunately, I replaced the struts and strut tops about 6 weeks ago.

since skylarking posted this in the other thread, maybe could be relevant re: front ball joints
