ive got the chance to snap up either a 284 or 286 cam for real cheap
now i know this isnt going to give great power if not F.A
but what can i expect with only a cam and lifters??

setup is

pacemakers into full twin 2.5" zorst / hiflow cats
soon to get 3:45 diff gears

what can i expect from this cam ??
low end?? or top end
5-10 kw gain? or even a loss?

If the rest of the motor/intake is stock you can expect a 15 (or more) kw loss below 4000 and maybe 5 or 10 above. Those camshafts are too big for an otherwise stock motor.

Yep even the 284 is too big for stock compression and the banana manifold, you can do much better if that's going to be the setup and what is real cheap? because the cam itself is never expensive

**** that sucks then! if im going backwards then stuff that then...
so what cam out there is even good for stock comp/intake
my neighbour builds motors for a living . he has a vr 355 running a flat 11
. so he asked me if im interested in a cam that he pulled outa a customers 304 since the guy is going to 355.
i gota find out exactly what cam it is i could be wrong . he said its a baby cam so i assumed it be a 284 or even 286 .

276 at the absolute most. Even that is a bit big for 8.5:1.

i fitted a 276 to mine, down the drags i picked up .3 of a second but lost considerable time of the 60ft but my 0-60 times improved, getting it past 3000rpm was a real challenge.

i pulled a 2.20 60ft stock just with a tune and zorst
and best i could pull after cam was 2.40+/- 5, id have to dig up my time slips

like everyone else has said, you need a manifold + a higher CR and a stall converter to get you past 2500-3000rpm is REALLY needed to go fast, your better off saving up and doing it all in the one go otherwise your shooting yourself in the foot

cams only cost round $200 for a new custom grind..... but you've gotta add lifters and you may as well do springs/ those weak excuses for valve stem seals (a water balloon ring would seal better)

assuming they havn't been decked before 40thou is a good amount from memory it should land you somewhere between 9:0 and 9.5 (9.3:1 i think)
don't forget a tune as well. the new cam will require different timing / fuel, 3k stallie is good.

the banana's still wont do the motor justice. i think it will still go slower than stock...

my mate had a 284 crane on stock everything, i remember him saying "lancers go faster than me!"
