Hi All,

I've got my engine out to redo the gaskets, and want to look into putting a new camshaft in (nothing spectacular, just something slightly better, like the Crow Cams 4001).

I've seen the camshaft and memcal kits that are available, but have read that you're better off putting a camshaft in and getting the ECU remapped instead.

Any thoughts either way? Is it a pretty common thing to redo the mapping on the ECU or would I have to search around for a specialist to do it?

most of the memcals that come with the camshaft/memcal kits are only good for the run in period.
They are fairly useless beyond that. Nothing beats a proper chassis dyno tune.

Good Delco tuners are getting harder to find these days, but they are around. I'm not sure what state you're from, I could suggest a couple of good Delco tuners if you live in Qld, otherwise I'm sure there are people here from other states who could suggest a good tuner.

When you fit a new cam (other than stock standard) you will need to have the tune altered to suit.

Outfits like crow do provide cam & tune packages but the tunes are generally very safe so that the tune would cover a multitude of variations on engine configurations (different exhaust and intakes etc), that way engines don't blow up and they protect their reputation.

I think crow 4001 is a good cam choice for an everyday touring car with reasonable fuel economy in mind.

As Darren asked: what state are you in? so someone can recommend a tuner to help you get the most out of your mod's

Tasmania. Being a Sunday (and everything is virtually closed), I've had a quick look around town to see if there were any places I could think of, but nothing popped out that could do the job...

Good cam but yeah crow tunes suck. All they really do is dump fuel. A mail order tune would do the job if you can't find a decent tuner in Tas. Happy to give you my tuners details. He did the mail order tune for my 304 (4502 crow cam, tp dual plane manifold etc).
