Hi guys,
Just got my 304 back from machine shop yesterday and am a bit confused about rear main. I had it converted from rope and was given hn040 seal but upon looking at the work done, i cant see anything different but just a bit of grinding on the cap for what it looks like a shamfer to help oil return to sump. This sound right to you all???
Also, does this seal fit half in and half out of the block\cap? In other words, to the outer side of the block where the rope supposed to fit?
Any info would be greatly appreciated guys.

the difference (as far as im aware) is on the crank journal itself. there should be little knurled things on your crank for neo.

and for rope it should be smooth.

can i ask wtf you were thinking converting to neo?

knurled for rope and smooth for neo.
Both cranks/blocks have a different rear journal size and are not interchangeable without modification.
Neither seal will interchange with the above.

The neo conversion seal is the V6 neo seal cut down (shortened) for the V8 rope block.
ACL used to do a drop in aftermarket neo seal but ACL make frack all for us now.

Advantages of neo seal is less drag and ease of fit.
Also the rope seal does not contain asbestos like they used to so can and will burn up alot easier than they used to, especially if it is incorrectly seated.

The knurling should be removed if retrofitting a V6 neo seal to a rope block.

Not these days, not when it is done properly. Neo seals also create less drag on the crank. win win really if it's done properly.

I think some guys don't even bother about the knurl finish on the crank either.

image.jpgimage.jpgHere are a couple. One is with crank in (fits better). Other is without crank which seems to be overly tight once crank in. Which one???

Im hung on the fence atm over the neo seal.
All my mates and tk (engine builder) prefers the neo seals and they push their morors pretty hard with no issues. Its not uncommon for them to weap a little oil but they dont leak like the rope seals can.
Mine could be leaking but it looks like its the rear corner of the sump gasket.... Fingers crossed once i fire it up again.
