Yep, take it back to 10° BTDC base timing and see what happens.

What fuel was the engine tuned with?
I don't know. Only assuming it was with 91.

This is what I use, it will become your best friend (304 uses the 9/16)

Thanks for that.
It's in my watch list now.

I thought I'd check the DTC's again and what do you know, it came up with
Codes; 44 and 64......Lean exhaust left and right.
They weren't there the other day when it started doing it.
Damn, the O2 sensors are not even 8 months old.

Everything we tune at work is recommended for 95 or greater. Maybe dropping your base timing back 2deg may fix this issue of yours if it is fuel RON related.

I have a timing light with a dial on the back, I turn the dial until the timing lines up with zero and then I know that what the dial says is what the advance is.
Also a reasonably short 9/16 ring spanner and skinny arm seem to get the dissy adjusted on my 8.

Don't reckon it is fuel, because I've run 91 in it for ages with no apparent problem.
I will put it back to 10deg however and get new O2 sensors as well, as I reckon they might be a good part of the problem.

I think I'll put them in myself, IF I can get the car high enough off the ground lol.

I take it they are the 4 wire type??

If by chance you happen to get sick of that light, throw it my way lol.

After doing some research on the O2 sensors, I found that some of the lean exhaust causes
could be
Vacuum leak....
TPS....
MAF....
IAT.....
Fuel reg, Pump, filter etc etc etc.

And one I haven't heard of before is an exhaust leak before the o2 sensor.
This can cause air to enter the exhaust and make the sensor believe there is more oxygen in the exhaust.

Another one is the MAP sensor, which I have because I don't have a MAF.
After disconnecting it and inspecting the plug, which was ok,
I plugged it back in and believe it or not all seems to be ok.

Before, I did notice the exhaust was fair bit louder than usual, also highlighted with a slight popping sound when backing off
and changing down.
After inspecting the MAP sensor and plug, this has seemed to have stopped and there also seems to be a significant improvement in
the responsiveness of the throttle.
I will still check the timing and take on your advice in reducing it to 10deg.
Thank you everyone for your input into my dilemma.

Just thinking out loud here... Isn't the Hall effect sensor also responsible for the timing of the injection as well? Obviously not being direct injected it won't make much difference at all, but it still might have some effect advancing the dizzy a little more?

As far as I know, the Hall Effect sensor in the distributor does the same as the CAS,
as the 304's don't have one.

If I remember correctly:
VN-VS distributors have a sensor that hits 8 times for the timing of the 8 sparks to the 8 plugs. VT distributors added another sensor to tell the timing of #1 so that it can begin the sequential injection process.
