Gday looking for some knowledge i just brought a project VK 308 stroked 355 ported heads mild cam with 2.35 advanced extractors into 3” custom exhaust with a 650 Holley while using the STD 308 air filter setup motor is 3 yo from fully rebuilt I’m wondering what air filter setup should be more beneficial to breath?
Any input/help much appreciated

Is the airbox modified on the underside where it is not seen or anything?
Maybe the previous owner removed a good filter and fitted the standard one for selling.

Either way, yes I agree it is strange.

It won't have an air filter box.
You're saying it's got the standard aircleaner on top of the carb yeah?
You could run the HDT Group A tray and a proper non enclosed aircleaner, where the tray feeds cold air to the airfilter from the grille. That's if you want to keep everything under the bonnet.
