VT 5.0 HSV Senator
Hi Guys, new here. I have a VT HSV with the 5.0L V8 Auto.

Decided that next year she's getting a rebuild and some power upgrades. I'm torn between the Come Racing 355 stroker kit or the 383 Stroker Kit. Just wondering how reliable a 383 setup would be, its not going to be a daily driver but most of its work will be street and the occasional track day.

Any thoughts would be really appreciated

Well, I had a 355 installed by COME in my VS Calais back in the day, and the engine was virtually bullet-proof for almost five years and 134,000 kms (including many racing laps at Sandown Raceway on multiple Murcott High Performance days).

Then I went 383 (non-COME) and had a continual rear main oil leak problem. Many rebuilds later and many $000s it still leaked. Seemed to almost spent more time on the workshop than on the road over the next 14 years and 160,000 kms. Effortless torque and power.

If I had my time again, and know what I know now, I would go the supercharging route. Also, bear in mind that your trans probably won't take the punishment that a 355 can deliver.

Having said that, perhaps the 383 Storkers are much better than the 383 Strokers (LOL).

Nah 383 just too much grinding & added expense.

Much rather 355 kit something like scat crank & rods is good bang for bucks...little to no grinding, more common parts & rev better.

That said rings/bearings + baby cam with yt whipple kit would be more than enough torque to blow up 4l60e on first fun drive....

Comes down to budget, style of driving & engine bay looks...also speak to engine builder/tuner to see what ballpark results for your coin gets you.

How does a 355 rev better? You can rev a 383 past 9k if you had a strong enough bottom end.
The whole smaller strokes rev better thing is a myth.
John Kasse said in an interview he stopped worrying about piston speeds long ago. Even if you stroked out a 308 to 400ci (which can't be done) you wouldn't even hit bad piston speeds at 9000rpm.
Look on you tube how many 500ci+ BBC engines there are that rev out to 8k on the dyno.
It's the cam and heads that determine engine RPM not engine stroke.
And the extra torque you get from a 383 vs a 355 has nothing to do with stroke but purely displacement.

I just did the math a 383 @8000rpm would be at 25 meters per second an audi R8 V10 hits 26 meters per second so even if you wanted to rev a 383 at 8000rpm which I woulden't recomend it's still got less piston speed than a production car.

Why bother to compare engines that are not the same?

Again have you ever built or put 10k into one of these engines?

There is a reason for 4 bolt caps & oil mods when these start making power.

If it's street car no point saying a holden block stroked to 383ci revs to 9k let alone will live anywhere near that rpm.

That's not my point. weather the engine will last at 9k is irrelevant to the point I'm trying to make.

You really need to get your facts straight (perhaps you can check your posts before you hit reply). First, the thread is about stroking a 304 to 383, not a 308. Second, if you check the link below you will see a 396 which is very close to 400ci.

No I don't.

Yes I know about a 396 but is that 400ci? No it's not.

I know we are talking about 355 and 383 kits but I was making a exaggeration to clarify my point. Is this too hard for your brain to comprehend? Have you heard of making comparisons? The difference between a 355 kit and a 383 kit is stroke so I mentioned 400ci as an example of what even more stroke would do in my explanation of RPM.

Maybe you miss read my post maybe you just can't read? But if you can go re-read my post and get your facts straight.

Come racing have a video on the 383 on youtube. I wouldn't do it unless they're the ones doing the clearancing.
