Useful and accurate info is what I was looking for when I joined this forum. I have no plans to rebuild a gearbox at the moment, but the detailed description is just the kind of thing those that do will need. Excellent work. Rep given.

Thanks mate. Another update. I have discovered that this transmission, when it was last rebuilt, had an Alto band installed in it. What i dont know if its standard size or the wide one. As when upgrading to a wide one (like the one im ordering) you need a new drum (this was just mentioned to me). Once i find out what was in my transmission ill edit the first post. Turns out when this transmission was rebuilt they put the Alto wide band in. This means i wont have to replace my reverse input drum. WOO!

What's the rough cost of all the part's?

I think last time i looked my local wanted $1900 for a rebuild.

Would be far more exhilarating doing the job myself i would think...

$525 for the kit
$49 for the wide band
$227 for postage.
$58 delivered for the transmission cooler (twice the size of standard)
$30 each for the pinless accumulator kits
$50 for a 0.500 boost valve
$30 for transmission line
$100 for fluid
$40 for Barb fittings and clamps
$395 for a reco TC (standard or 500rpm higher stall)

This price list is for a rebuild to handle 550hp and 450ft torque at the wheels. Perfect for the constant engine upgrader.
You can get much cheaper kits, about $200 to $300 that replaces worn parts, but do it one, do it right.

I keep forgetting to take photos of the rebuild. So from hear on out ill just point out the differances between stock and aftermarket.
This will explain how to do the tear down and rebuild. www.motordrenaline.com.au/gmpowertrain4l60e.pdf

looking good, I have just finished rebuilding one for my car, got all my parts from the states as well much cheaper than buying locally
agree with you on triple checking everything, I think I have had the pump off 3 or 4 times during the build as I kept questioning if I had got the free play of the clutches etc. right each time I rechecked it was OK but much better than having it lunch itself when you first start it up
just make sure you soak the clutches and band for at least 30mins in trans fluid before you fit them as they will rip the face off them and you will be stuffed

I think I have spent around $1100 on parts including all new solenoids, wiring harness and mild torque converter and the box itself ($1 off ebay), I got quoted $2k for a box with similar parts
I had always been scared of doing an auto but they are not that bad now that I have done one

Repped. I'm keen to give this ago just for the sake of doing it when I get the time as I have a spare one here that started slipping. Never pulled an auto down before.

So far its easy, and with all the info supplied in this thread from other people and myself you should be able to do it. I have never done i before which is why im taking my time. Im still waiting on some parts from furious performance ( really dont wnt to do business with them again) and i have to hunt down a new reverse input drum.
