My old trans tech used to put Hi Tec full syn in mine. Someone on here said Nulon is the same gear with a different label so I put that in the old 4L60e and it was fine as it was too hard to get Hi Tec locally, even though probably 80% of the garages use it.

280km motor that's too thin. I use Nulon 20/50 high km oil, runs buttery smooth for me. I just ticked over 230km.

Gotta compare apples with apples. He's got a alloytec, you have a ecotec.

I run either 10w-40 or 15w-40 Penrite semi or mineral oil in our L67, 275,000km and still sounds perfect.

GM runs thin oils to get better fuel economy for marketing BS, I'd go one step thicker and I doubt you'll see a decrease in economy.

I was hoping that was the case. I run 10/40 in the L98 instead of 5/30. Although I'm not 100% sure I think it's dropped less between oil changes than it did with the 5w in it. Seems like 90% of LS owners on here still go with GM recommendation.

GM don't care about longevity, fuel mileage is king in marketing followed by service interval/cost. Thin fluids that are changed less often go to both of those goals, but what about longevity...... How long is the warranty!

Fairly much the same reason Holden changed their oil recommendation for all engines when they first fitted the LS1 motors, less fluid types they needed to stock in their workshops. It's all about cost savings (for them).

Would be good if someone put together a guide on which oil to use, with a rough km range. Eg 50-80k: 5w30, 80-120k: etc.

Something thats easy to reference, put together from experience. My 2010 3.0 has 275k on the clock. I followed the recommended nulon 5w30 but from what i have read i would have been better off with 10w40 or similar. Having just changed it, i dont wanna pour $80 down the oil recycler.

Try next time. 5w40 or 10w40. Mostly depends what kind of driving you do.

Engine oils are a whole other story. I would never use 5w30 in an Alloytec in Australia unless it's purely a local driving shopping trolley.
Always used 5w40 in mine. Runs like a dream and always has for over 10 years wether it's middle of winter or 45 degree summer scorcher. The original synpower, it's awesome stuff.
Agreed. I try to use 5w-40 as well.

One wonders why? There are so many grades on the market you really don't need to be doing any quasi bucket science in the garage. The manufacturers have already done it for you, they call it 5w40.
