Don't get a Patrol, you will end up wasting your money getting a new clutch or gear box for it. Where I work nearly every week we get a Nissan 4wd getting a new gear box or getting it rebuild. One only had 15,000k's on it, It seems that only the new ones have this problem.
Plus you're forever waiting for the petrol boys to spray all their terminals with water dispersant at the start of the trip Sent from here, so you can read it there via iPhone.
Check the last 3 pics above, no WD-40 sprayed at all that day. Went in, sat in the water idling for a bit, at one point it even stalled but started straight up again. No WD-40 afterwards either. 3.5L EFI petrol.
couple of my mates have done the cape twice in 2 years now and they have never taken a trailer. they packed pretty basic just swagging in and cooking with camp ovens. there main tips were have a couple of spares and if in an older car put in new wheel bearings, have good remote breathers on diffs and transfer case and check everything twice before you go. they didnt hold back either they took the hard tracks were possible and the only trouble they had was a staked tyre... good luck mate im setting my rig up for march when im heading up there
1970 Series 2a Landrover (before they added some ugly stuff called 'plastic' in the series3) Short Wheel base; Safari Model I have had it over 5years, but it always seems to be the 'fill in project' for when I'm not doing other things, slow build really. It has: *Holden 202' *90's Lovato LPG mixer *31' All Terrains on 15" rims *aluminium door tops *rebuilt axle's with 3.9:1 diff ratio, *wheel alignment done with: a straight edge, colouring pencil and a tape measure. *Custom built dash, hand throttle control, 'red bull' dissy coil LOL, random panels patching on rust repairs, red taildoor. oh and a new exhaust manifold from when I drove through a huge puddle, heaps of water found the exhaust manifold, rapidly cooling it, and creating a crack around 4-5inches long! I don't seem to have many pictures of it on my CPU, but here are a few, including my messed up front bumper from trying to pull my mates hilux-surf out of trouble

Oh man, some of you have my dream 4wds!!! I have a little green Suzuki Sierra and I love the little meepmeep but she's not what I want at all. I want that series 2 landrover!!! Love the ol' beasts. Now there's a 4wd. Shove a lift kit under it and maybe a roll cage because it's me and we're gold.
Has anyone here done a trip to Fraser Island around New Years before? After a few too many beers on the weekend, a mate and I made a pact that we would be spending this NYE on Fraser Island. We have both been their before and are mainly returning for the friendly backpackers so I was wondering if anyone had any good places to commit too, as we don't want to be driving up and down the island camp hopping if we have had too much to drink. can anyone think of a nice spot to visit and set up for new years?
Bit of an update if anyone cares lol, after fitting 33" tyres, my diffs don't seem to like them. 3 diffs in 5 weeks. The last one actually wanted to see what it was like outside and decided to vacate the housing. I have sourced front and rear GQ Patrol diffs that I will be grafting in shortly. Going from the stock Rangie 3.54 gears to Patrol 4.11's. Should work out nicely. I'll post up pics of the progress when I get started.
3 rear diffs. First one did the spider gears, second one did an axle AND the spider gears, 3rd one shattered the crown wheel and spider gears. And to top it, while I was getting towed up a hill (bit hard to climb with only front wheel drive) a rock punched a hole in the front diff too.
That thing needs some lift and a good set of BFG M/T tyres preferably 35" at a bare minimum. They call it "off-roading" when there are no roads.
