I know this is the recommended oil, but is it still OK for an engine with high K's?

Unless you've had the engine reco'd, I'm guessing you'd have a little wear on the mbore and other parts. I would probably be to a 10w40 or 10w50, but if it's not using any oil between changes and isn't blowing smoke, you might be ok.

I bought the car about 2 weeks ago. I have a feeling it has been very neglected. previous owner says it has always been serviced, but the dash keeps telling me that it needed to be serviced at 280,000 but it's now at 313,000. It runs rough on first start. it's got no smoke but it's very low on oil. it runs pretty smooth and has heaps of power (until the coils start playing up...).

I'd be dumping all your fluids if you dont know the history.

Engine, gearbox/tranny, diff, brake/clutch, power steering. Try the 5w30 and see what happens. If it starts blowing smoke, youve at least flushed the oil cavities. Then go to something a little heavier, 10w40 and see how that goes.

Personally I would stay with a quality 5-30 oil, and change it and the filter regularly.

I ended up buying Nulon 5w-30, I'll see how it goes. No smoke so far.

I'm quite certain you won't have any trouble if you use a 40 weight oil. I have been using 5W40 in mine for the last 100,000 Ks and it's great, done 260,000 Ks. Either way as long as you get that old oil out ASAP the car will love you.
As already said definitely do the power steering fluid and Auto trans as well. You will be amazed.
My personal favorite power steering fluid in my VE is Nulon Full Syn MV ATF in the gold bottle! Was like driving a different car when I put that in.
