Does anyone out there know whether it is possible to put a T5 gear box into a series 2 commodore which normaly had a Getrag 5 speed? I know that series 1 and 2 have different flywheels to suit the different gear boxes but can you pit a series 1 flywheel on a series 2 engine? My mate has just had his clutch go in his series 2 and will cost $1800 to fix with a new flywheel for it. He can get a good t5 cheap and wants to put it in.
Other Options The $1,800 seems high. I replaced my clutch/gearbox for $1,400 with genuine items, including labour. Was too busy at the time to do it myself. The other alternative is to go to a solid flywheel and a compatiable clutch kit. I got quoted $1,100 for that without pushing. I believe that this gives a stronger clutch, but it can rattle a bit in neutral. Subsequent clutch kits are then cheaper. I believe that, prior to the Getrag gearbox, the clutch was cable operated rather than hydraulic. So to go back in gearbox/clutch would require a bit more effort that initially evident. I would look at changing the flywheel to a solid one first as the dual mass flywheel is the real expensive item. I was not happy at the cost, but in the end I thought that it was the first money I had expended on the car in eight years. Less than $200 a year for unscheduled maintainence is OK by me.
Yeh i thought the hydrolic clutch issue might be a pain. Think my mate is better off replacing the clutch and flywheel instead.
