I have a 99 calais automatic, currently stuck in second gear, speedo not working & no codes coming up.
Firstly we serviced & replaced all transmission solenoids, replaced speed sensor, new alternator and still nothing changed. Any ideas? Mechanic now ordered another instrument cluster as he thinks it could be one of the computer/electrical things in behind there. Any suggestions very much welcomed.

that's the way, just throw parts at it
when you say auto stuck in second, do you literally mean stuck in second,
or park/nuetral work fine and car will only change up to second when you are driving
how are you determining that you have no fault codes
if you use instrument diagnostics
with key off
Hold mode and up then key on to red lights or start if you want
then release mode and up buttons
Press Mode = Dash Part Number - e.g. 1731
Press Mode = Mode Switch Voltage - e.g. BV - - - 5.0
Press Mode = Battery Voltage - e.g. V 11.8
Press Mode = Petrol Sender Voltage - e.g. FUEL 02.6
Press Mode = LPG Sender Voltage - e.g. VL 5.0
Press Mode = Remaining Fuel - e.g. 38L
Press Mode = Instantaneous Fuel (Liters per Hour) - e.g. 12.8 L/H
Press Mode = Engine Coolant Temp - e.g. 63 C
Press Mode = Vehicle Speed - e.g. 45 KM/H
Press Mode = Tachometer - e.g. 2380
Press Mode = Park Lamps Switch - e.g. P OFF
Press Mode = Dash Trouble Codes - e.g. t 00 (Press up/down to scroll through any codes, these are not PCM, ABS, etc codes)
Press Mode = Dash Test - All gauges will move, lights will come on and buzzer will sound.
a faulty speedo sensor (fault 24) will cause car to go into limp mode and not let car go any higher than second gear
still sounds like you need a new speedo sensor or repair wiring between speed sensor and pcm

Did you disconnect the battery when you changed your sensors, might just need the limp mode cleared

Firstly, we are rural & as this is our only car plus a husband with Parkinson's dementia I need a drivable vehicle.

I was driving home & next thing I lost power, like it was in neutral. Stopped, put in drive & was fine for a couple hundred metres & did same thing, managed to do manual 1st & 2nd to get home. Mechanic did first scan mechanic rang auto shop who said it was the speed sensor, so replaced that and checked wiring & disconnected battery to reset. Went ok for a few kms then same thing, but now only have 2nd gear. Tested alternator & it was nearly stuffed, low outage so replaced that & new battery.
Put another cluster in today & still no change. Have Park & can move the stick but will just rev if in any other gear than 2nd.

limp mode doesn't just happen without something triggering it. There must be a fault code somewhere. Without the fault code no-one here can give advice....

...unless the code isn't being recorded. Does the remote unlock still work? BCM/ECM might be faulty if there is no codes recorded. Two separate problems if there is no fault code recorded. First, the thing causing the code and limp mode, second the fact the code isn't being recorded for diagnostics. Someone who knows where those codes are actually generated and recorded may be able to help more than I.

maybe there was a dull thud at louts computer ...who knows

you did the speedo sender and solenoids

my research from other forums about this 4l60e box .and being stuck in 2 nd .lots of hits .. many without resolution

..says a voltage problem to the box and solenoids may cause this
an internal mechanical failure

this is another forum http://gmlongroof.4umer.com/t6394-common-4l60e-problems

point 5 no speedo mentioned
point 6 if tranny is stuck in 2nd can be driven till repaired
