hey guys, i have a friend who has a Ve like mine also except the fact that his is older. He went for a drive in my car the other day and he prefers the 6speed gearbox over the 5 speed... we are talking autos. is it possible to do a gearbox conversion and put a 6 speed gearbox into his 5 speed?
Cost vs outcome is what comes into play. Its not going to be a simple bolt on and off she goes thing. There will be tuning involved, the price of labour and parts. So $3000+ for an extra gear.
It doesn't really matter gearbox and transmission are pretty much the same thing but going from 5 to 6 would definitely be manual
try to find an automatic gearbox specialist, they are classed as auto trans specialists... new cars are advertised to have automatic transmissions , not auto gearboxes... sorry if it was a bit advanced for you , but it makes it easier to clarify things when we are talking about an unknown vehicle.. when you read a topic that says "6 speed gearbox into 5 speed car" , most people with some mechanical experience would first picture that as being about manuals..
Not really. Since we are in the ve section the only ve with a 5 speed is the 06-09 ve sv6's. Don't need to be know gearbox specialist to figure what this thread is on about. If ya don't have anything meaningful to add to this post no point commenting. Moving along, do any mechanics know if this will bolt up, let's not talk about electrics at the moment, just the physical box itself is what has me interested at the moment. As the 5 speed is only rated to 340nm and the 6 speed is some thing around the 480 mark but not 100% sure. Would be a great upgrade as also the 6th gear is wider meaning lower rpm on the highway.
exactally my thinking. also that the sports mode on the 5 speed is rubbish. but who cares if i said gearbox instead of a tranny we all know what we are talking about
I wonder if the computer would need to be told it has a different transmission too since it controls just about everything!
The Ecu will need to be at the least reflashed to run the manual Ecu or go aftermarket Ecu is a possibility.
