I'm in the process of replacing the headlining in my VP. When I've pulled the old one out I've found that the 2 steel ribs which run across the roof have come completely free of the roof. The front one also supports the centre light fitting. It looks like they were bonded with a sealant and I'm thinking sikaflex sealant or their sealant/adhesive, which is a little more expensive, would be suitable.
I've worked out a way I can run a support across the car and wedge the ribs firmly up against the roof while the sealant cures. I think I'll be driving around for a week or so without the headlining and with the ribs wedged up against the roof.
So my query is about the sikaflex. It's gotta be the best thing isn't it?

Sikaflex adhesive should work.

I'd be worried that if the supports are not close the the skin, Sikaflexing them together will ripple your roof skin

Sometimes it might look like it’s separated but isn’t.

Eg this:

Let’s look right in there:

They are bonded. This is on my VZ Crewman, but I don’t recall one on my VP ute.
The interior light was mounted to back cross bar on the roof above the window. I could ha e that wrong. Goes a way back in my memory.

On mine the ribs are definitely completely separated including the extension in the middle that the light mounts on. Now when I drive without the headlining in place the light plate flaps and bangs on the roof. Previously the weight of the headlining was pulling the whole lot down a bit and keeping it clear of the roof

The ribs will wedge close along most of their length. They are meant to be bonded together. It's not an option to leave everything unattached and flapping around. The ribs play a part in supporting the headlining. Sikaflex should have good gap filling properties and remains flexible so I figure it's the right type of product. The original sealant/adhesive is still there (or was). I'll see if the auto sika is available at my local outlets.

Mine is like an orange expandable foam adhesive looking product.
Essentially, some panel sealant would be enough to bond it a little and dampen the noise. Might be why the foam looking stuff is used.
Structurally, it’s not significant to have the roof “skin” bonded to the cross beam.

Yea I have used 227 before and it is good but expensive when compared to T Rex Power at around $12 to $14
My last job required 8 tubes so over $60 savings was good.
I used it sticking stainless steel sheet to concrete.
Both are good for repairing the black engine covers and dash panels cause it sticks to anything.
Actually buses are built with it.
