If there is no vacuum to the controls, the air will only come out of the windscreen vents, and no others.
Check as above^^.

There is also a small, round, white, one way valve inline on the hose from the manifold.
That may be sicking and not allowing any vacuum to flow.

Put your ear right up to the selector dial while the engine is running and see if you can hear any air hissing.
This may confirm the vacuum "harness" on the back of the selector dial may be loose, or have come adrift.

Importantly, carefully check for splits, holes, cracks etc. in the hoses.
They do unfortunately, have a habit of splitting and cracking.

Also, when I sucked the hose from the inlet manifold end, it allowed a bit of air through but then blocked. Should that be right or should it constantly suck air?

so I was hoping someone could inform me on how to take apart the dial fascia to get to the presumably loose hose behind the dial.

Take of the centre console fascia first, before you remove the dash fascia.
Then, there are 2 screws holding the HVAC controls in.
You will have to disconnect the metal rod from the temperature selector, before you can fully remove the unit.
It's just a plastic clip on the back of the selector.
Just make sure you don't re adjust it, as it's already set and DON'T FORGET TO PUT IT BACK ON AFTERWARDS.

thanks a tonne, will have a go tomorrow if it's not raining.

when you say don't adjust it do you mean the rod?

and so basically it's:

remove console fascia
remove 2 screws
disconnect rod some how (hopefully can figure this out intuitively)
pull out hvac controls
make sure vacuum tubes connected

No that's right.
If you have a look down the hose from the inlet manifold, you'll see what looks like
a white cylindrical plastic thingy in line with the hose, about the size of a small thimble.
That's a one way valve, so as the vacuum doesn't bleed back to the inlet manifold.

Yep saw that and realized it was a valve but when I suck, it doesn't allow a constant flow of air. I can only suck a bit and then it blocks. It doesn't let ANY air in when you blow (obviously).

edit: it's probably nothing..

but would you agree with the order of steps in that list I wrote?

Thanks heaps

Sorry, messed up the adjusting bit.
If you give me a few minutes, I'll post a picture of the clip and adjustment bit.

Oh yeah.
When you suck into the hose, you are replicating what the inlet manifold would do.
You wont get air flow through that hose, because no air is coming in from the other end.
If it did, you'd have no selector control.
It's sort of works like sealing your hand over the end of a vacuum cleaner.
Anyway....I doubt you could replicate the vacuum, because you couldn't suck as hard as the inlet manifold would.

Here's how....
Remove centre console fascia.
Remove dash fascia.
Partly remove heater control unit by undoing the 2 screws.
Disconnect temperature control rod (See pictures below).
Remove wiring loom plug from the back of the unit.
Important:
Have a beer and think; "How the bloody hell am I going to put it all back together" hahaha.

By the way. The rod in these pictures is actually a skewer, as this unit is a spare one I've got.
The rod actually sits horizontal, not vertical, as you will find out.

On the back of the vent selector, there are a selection of hose fittings.
All the hoses that connect to the back of the unit, are all connected together in the form of what's called a "manifold".
DO NOT disassemble this hose manifold because, as sure as ****, you'll have a load of trouble figuring out what
hose goes where, when it's time to put it back together.

Just disconnect the whole assembly, from the back of the unit, in one go.
Don't panic, as it can only go back on one way.

Thanks again.

Tonight I took it all apart. The air seems to be leaking from the vent selector manifold.
Is it the vent slector manifold that you need to replace to fix the problem?
When I fiddle around with my fingers, the nob starts working again.
I feel like the problem is that the screws arnt tight enough that hold the vent selector manifold to the back of the heater control unit.
