The first and easiest thing to check is that there is a thin vacuum hose connected at the rear of the intake manifold. It should be in good condition and fit tightly.

after that it'd be possibly that they've come off from behind the controls themselves.

If there is no vacuum to the controls, the air will only come out of the windscreen vents, and no others.
Check as above^^.

There is also a small, round, white, one way valve inline on the hose from the manifold.
That may be sicking and not allowing any vacuum to flow.

Put your ear right up to the selector dial while the engine is running and see if you can hear any air hissing.
This may confirm the vacuum "harness" on the back of the selector dial may be loose, or have come adrift.

Importantly, carefully check for splits, holes, cracks etc. in the hoses.
They do unfortunately, have a habit of splitting and cracking.

If all of the hoses mentioned above are tight an air-con mob will charge you around $400 to fix the blower or whatever they fixed on mine. I probably got ripped off but I couldn't figure out what was wrong and we were in the middle of our 40+C heatwave in Adelaide so I just paid it.

Any chance someone could upload a picture of the hose at the rear of the intake manifold? Do you need to take the engine cover off? Also, if the connection is loose at the knob, how do you get to it? Just bought a VX and it has the same problem. Thanks.

This is the hose (circled below).
It would be better to remove the cover.

Thanks a lot NutKracker. I checked the hose behind the manifold and it fits snug and I put a few zip ties on it to keep it on tight.
Although the problem is still there.
There IS a hissing noise coming from the selector dial when the car is on, so I was hoping someone could inform me on how to take apart the dial fascia to get to the presumably loose hose behind the dial.
