Hey, i am soon to get a new stereo which has steering wheel control capabilities so thought id see about adding them as my car doesnt have them. I know that to get a new stereo to work with the old system i need something like this https://aerpro.com/fp8018k . however thats only if you do have existing controls. ive taken off the steering wheel plate and there isnt the extra cable there (i didnt really expect there to be). has anyone got any experience with this?
so id need to get a new clockspring that has the cables but what else would i need to run the controls from the clock spring to the stereo?
    Cheers.

So you have three connectors from the clock spring, air bag, horn and an extra? It is possible that the steering wheel controls were removed previously and the extra connector is for the steering wheel controls.

In that case you will need a new clock spring. I don't think you will need anything else but I'm not sure.

Maybe buy a good used steering wheel with the controls and then buy a new clock spring.
Seems a lot of work and expense, when fitting our new stereo we did away with the steering wheel controls.
Never used them and I think the adaptor/computer thingy from the harness was more than the cost of the entire stereo.

Sorry it took me a while to reply. i had to check it all out. so i think the main problem will be that the controls go through the bcm so id need to get the wires from the clock spring to there, then from the bcm to radio along with the harness which is around $90.
Anyway, i sort of have a new idea now. so the stereo ive got has a remote with it (useless considering its going in a ute). but would there be some way i could map the buttons on my steering wheel to the remote? or something similar? not sure if this has been done.
