Hey all,

I'm looking at a 2012 SSV Redline. It's an automatic so it comes with the AFM (Active Fuel Management). I've heard this can have issues but don't know much about it.

Is it that bad?

Most SS's I'm looking at for around my budget seem to have it so I can't avoid it. This one looks like a not bad buy.

I have an early 2009 AFM SS - it only has about 90,000Km on it, The earlier ones like mine with L76 engine are supposed to be the ones more likely to have issues, 2012 I presume would be L77. I wouldn't worry, my 11 years old SS has been fine (I bought it 5 years ago with just under 60,000Km at the time. As you can see I've only done 30,000 in 5 years. It's not driven daily.

No its not that bad,
but
The only thing I have found,
is if you have stuffed engine mounts, especially the left hand one [passengers side] it vibrates through the car in 4 cyl mode,
So replace both, so they are matched.
However, AFM is not for everyone,
And have read they have lifter issues,
I have a lifter noise when its cold,
but runs great when its warm and benefit with the fuel economy out on the open road & highways.
I purchased at 17,000k's [ex GM exec car]
Its just clocked over 173,000ks 7 years later.
And its my daily, around the suburbs and Victoria.
And would not part with it.

If you want one without AFM, you either need to go Manual or get a Series 1 VE with the L98.

The manual series 2 still has all the afm lifters etc it’s just not activated

My ve had the AFM disconnected when I bought it. I don't know if the lifters were changed or it was just turned off.
I have no interest in having it turned back on because I consider it to be a gimmick. The economy is pretty good
as it is considering the motor size and the weight of the car.. If economy is your main objective then a v8 is not for you.

Yeah good old AFM. I have had 2 cars with AFM and soon after owning the first one AFM was disabled because if you are thinking about putting an exhaust on you will want to shoot yourself when the AFM kicks in. Lesson learned.
I also believe it was a sales driven load of nonsense.
