bought an online replacement air con compressor last year & it has only lasted a year almost to the day!! the clutch on the compressor won't engage unless I use a persuader(rubber mallet). the other day when I started the car it sounded like the car backfired but I am guessing it was the compressor clutch wrecking itself.
I still cools really well when it is going but the fact I have only got 12 months out of it on the car is a bit of a pisser. the supplier says 12 month direct replacement if fitted by a technician, which it was, but we will still be $250 out of pocket if we need to get the old one removed and the new one gassed up.
So...does anyone know if you can diy replace the clutch mechanism?

thanks for the reply I watched the tubes and it looks easy enough. this morning when I tried it, the first 2 times I switched it on it went. the third time I didn't. so yeah, I think the electrics are all good and it still cools really well. so I am leaning towards the clutch.
I suppose I just need to find where I can get a clutch from, any ideas?

sounds like you have too big of an air gap between the two cluth surfaces.

if you undo the nut on the front, remove the front half of the clutch, there should be shims in there. remove one, put it back together, and see how that goes.

If he just gets the clutch (which I don't think he needs) there is no need to touch the gas.

but how would the air gaps have changed between yesterday, when it worked, and today when it doesn't?? I want to avoid having it re-gassed in anyway as that will be more doe to spend. I haven't heard back from the store yet so I will wait for that.
I'm thinking if they send me a new one I might pull the clutch off that and swap them over to see what happens.
do you need a puller to get the front plate off, or is it just nut & spring clip. thanks for the replies guys.

You can remove the clutch with the compressor still in the car,
You do need some sort of puller to get it off. I made one to suit but it was a long time ago and I don't remember how I did it.
