air con smells like petrol

I have a 2000 Model VT and sometimes, very rare, and i can happen after 10 mins or after an hour of using the air con

a strong fuel smell comes through the vents

what is this

As DeanoHSV said you obviously have fuel leak somewhere in your engine bay.

I would locate and fix the leak urgently, as your car could catch on fire.
