The aircon isn't very cold, so I call up a mobile service. He came out and said that filter-drier needs to be replaced, unfortunately it is rusted, and odds-on can't be removed without damaging the condensor or pipe. So he dosed it with penetrating oil, and said he will come back next weekend to try get it off....
Is this seizing of fittings a common problem?

Very common. Chances are the condensor and pipe will need replacing at the same time.

If you have room around the pie fitting, and if you can tap the pipe nut on both sides with 2 hammers, that will shock the fitting, you will be able loosen it a bit easier.
Also best to use a slit ring spanner for pipe fittings.

The main issue is the aluminium fittings corrode, and will fall apart as soon as you put a spanner on them.

I'd be getting a new condenser and liquid line fitted as well, cause it is pretty much guaranteed to fall apart.

mmmmm...............just crack it open I guess ?, just make sure you don't have a representative of the EPA behind you.........please. ;););)

In actual fact I'm in the same boat here myself with my sons VS, unless one can change the front bearing without pulling it all apart which I'm certain you can't do.

Keep oil saturating the fitting and give it at least a week if not longer.

If it works in 20 minutes then it should definitely be ready in a week ...
